From my sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59) in NC:

Dale reading his call letter Paul, Dale, Carol and Adrienne Happy Dale

I'm rather notoriously slow at developing film...
Eleanor sent me these images taken on 11/17/03 of my #6 son, Dale,
receiving his call to serve full-time for two years as a Spanish-speaking missionary
for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Carlsbad, CA.
He'll report to Provo, UT on 01/14/04 for training.
Thanks, Eleanor!  And congratulations, Dale!

November 24, 2003

From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of NN, VA:

Dale's daughter, Trudy and husband, Kevin, had their first child and our 2nd grandson,
Ryder Austin Mock, yesterday in Sarasota, FL.
He was 5 weeks early, weighed 5 lbs., 7 oz. and is 19" long.
Since he's a "preemie", the doctors are monitoring him closely to make sure everything's okay.
When I get pictures, I'll be sure and forward them.

AH!!!  Wonderful news!  Congratulations to you all!

Please feel free to send us your favorites as well, so that we might all enjoy them:

October 8, 2003

From Susie Overton Jones ('63) of NN, VA:

The response from the class of 1963 to have this re-union as soon as we could has been great,
and we are all hoping for good weather.

We have had a couple of cancellation due to previous unchangeable commitments from only three classmates,
and now there are a few that will be able to attend the reunion now scheduled for Oct 17th-19th at The Radisson Hotel, Hampton.

The new attendees are:  Janice Clark Palmer and her husband Jim, Richard Honeycutt and his wife Millie.

There is still time for NNHS Alumni to attend our Friday night kick-off.
7:00 PM Radisson Hotel, Hampton, Rooms 206 & 208, $30.00 per person.

The ones unable to attend are:  Lola Babb Hallman and Jim Hallman,  Mary Lou Hinson Moore,
Carol Smith Saunders and Bob Saunders, and possibly, Mary Beth Sawyer Humes & Don Humes.

Carol, thank you sooooooo very much for all you do for the web site, and the kind words of encouragement to classmates.

You're welcome, Susie - and thanks for the updates!

October 6, 2003

From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of NN, VA:

"I finally have found the time to sit down to send pictures of our grandson, Jarrett (born September 10, 2003)...
I've got so many to chose from, as you know from experience.

This one was taken in the hospital before he went home.

This one's of our daughter, Kimberly, the proud mom
with her son!

The proud grandparents!

Watching the big screen - three weeks old

What a beautiful baby!  Thanks, Sandi!

September 29, 2003

From Pam Smith Arnold - formerly Pam Smith Tomczyk ('65) of IL and VA:

"I am taking advantage of Carol's wonderful work in compiling a huge copy-to list to send out several pieces of news.
Sorry to bother those of you who don't know me or Dave.

First, Dave and I are fairly decisive people who don't take long to make decisions and don't look back.
So ... for reasons mostly associated with my children, we decided to go ahead and get married.  And we did on August 30th.
I am now Pam Arnold - and most happy to have a name that can be pronounced and spelled -
there are several other reasons that I am happy too :>)

We still plan on having a larger gathering which we are now calling a marriage celebration.
Bobby Yevak will still officiate (which Dave and I are thrilled about), my older son has asked to be Dave's best man
and my daughter will by my matron of honor.
We want it to be outside, and it will be in the Peninsula area.
And I would love to have any of you who would like to come and be happy with us to attend.
So - we can have a party and all see each other again!
Dave and I will be letting you know more but I am looking at the end of June 2004 right now.

Today is my last official day at Lucent,
but no one knows that as my VP has asked me to stay on for 2 1/2 months while he replaces me.
Long story, but I went to him with a deal which he accepted, and I feel like I was really in the catbird seat wit this.
It's a great thing!  So, my e-mail address will be changing:  it is
The old address has been changed to
pja@lucent.com, but I'd really prefer getting mail at the Cox address.

I hope you are all having days that are as happy as mine have become.
And I hope that you will save a day in June to come celebrate with us.

Pam Arnold (formerly - but never again - Tomczyk)"

WOW!  Congratulations!  What fabulous news!!!

(See entries of March 5, 2003 and May 12, 2003 below.)

From Janice McCain Rose ('65) of Chesapeake, VA:

Hurricane Isabel brought some good news to our family.....our oldest son,
Bryan, became a  grandfather when his step-daughter Jessica delivered little
Leighann Wednesday before the hurricane hit.  Leighann weighed 5 lbs. 14
oz.....she was 3 weeks early but both mother and baby are doing fine!

This makes Fred and me (gasp!!!)

Thanks, Janice!  Congratulations!

September 19, 2003

From Me ('65) in NC:

Hurricane Isabel struck the East Coast yesterday, wreaking havoc and destruction,
and postponing the 40th Reunion for the Class of 1963.

September 13, 2003

From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of NN, VA:

I'm happy to report that our grandson has finally been born, only 4 days late!
After 16 hours of intense labor, and eventual c-section, my daughter Kimberly
and her husband Jeremy, had a son, Jarrett Mason Easley, on Sept. 10, 2003.
He weighed 8 lbs., 4 oz., and is 22" long.
Kimberly's husband, Jeremy is 6'5", so I guess Jarrett will be a
good basketball player someday!!
They've had a little setback, as the baby has jaundice, so they haven't come home yet.
Hopefully, tomorrow.  I'll be in NC for a couple of weeks helping her out.
Kimberly's dad is Richie Allen, Class of '66.
Will send pictures later, probably not until I get back home to VA.

Thanks, Sandi!  And congratulations!

September 12, 2003

From Me ('65) in NC:
Okay, REALLY from my daughter-in-law, Bethany, in OR:

Check out these cute pics of Joe in his blessing outfit.  Isn't he cute?
He was blessed on Sunday, September 7, 2003 in the Springfield Oregon 3rd Ward
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He's wearing his brother Jacob's blessing outfit (made by Grammie Carol)
and his brother Thomas' blessing outfit (bought by Aunt Sue).
Just wanted to share his special day with you all!
Bethany :)

Thanks, Bethany!

September 10, 2003

From Janice McCain Rose ('65) of Chesapeake, VA:

This past weekend was my club's  annual golf club championship,
and although I did not come in low net (no parking spot for me),
I did come in low gross - 1st place in the 1st flight - and I received a very nice wall plaque.

Thanks, Janice!  Congratulations!

September 8, 2003

From Tom Oxner ('65) of AR:

I have endured the curse of being a gearhead most of my life.
I certainly was at NNHS.
Throughout graduate school, I managed to repress these urges, but ultimately,
I had to come out of the closet and admit that I really am a gearhead.
For the past few years, I have been autocrossing various Porsche 911s.
A photo of my current 72 911 is at

The sanctioning body in which I autocross
(autocrossing is an event where a cones are used to define a course in a parking lot or airport)
is the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
They allow kids to autocross in go-carts
(with a number of restrictions for safety reasons) as young as 8 years of age.
When my son Luke turned 8, we bought him a go-cart so he could go
autocrossing with me.
I really enjoy our participation at these events (great male bonding time).

Each year the Arkansas Region of the SCCA presents a trophy called the Governor's Cup.
It is called the Governor's Cup because the former Governor of Arkansas (Win Rockefeller)
was a car guy and came out to present the original trophy many years ago.
In autocrossing there are many classes to accommodate the many different types of vehicles.
In an attempt to draw comparisons between competitors in the many different classes,
the National Office of the SCCA prepares an index to use to compare the classes
(the index is called the PAX).
The fastest class, A Modified, has an index of 1.00.
Each "lower" or slower class has a PAX of less than 1.00 .
The class in which I compete, A Street Prepared, has a PAX of .814.
Luke competes in a class called Formula Junior in his go cart.
A photo of Luke in his go-cart is available at

The Governor's Cup Trophy is presented to the competitor
at this event who has the the fastest PAX or index time.
Each competitor's raw time is multiplied by the PAX to determine the indexed time.

On Sunday, August 17, the 2003 Governor's Cup event was held in
Pine Bluff, AR at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff's football stadium parking lot.
When time came to present the 2003 Governor's Cup trophy,
the current Lt. Governor (Win Rockefeller, Jr.) presented the trophy.

The winner of the 2003 Governor's Cup was my son, Luke.

His raw time was faster than all but three individuals in highly modified cars.
His PAX, or indexed time, was faster than any of the other 40 some adults who competed in the event.
Yes, I was one of the adults that he beat!

The photo of the Lt. Governor presenting him the trophy is at

I am very proud of Luke.
He has improved tremendously as a driver in the past year and one half.
He was quite excited to win the Governor's Cup AND be presented the trophy by the Lt. Governor.

Tom Oxner the Proud Dad

WOW!  Thanks, Tom - and congratulations to both you and Luke!

From Susie Overton Jones ('63) of NN, VA:

The 40th Reunion for the Class of 1963:

From Wayne Stokes ('65) in VA:

"I don't think I have mentioned that my first born, Melanie Lee Stokes
Pesola, and her husband, Eric, gave Linda and me our first grandchild on

Hospital!!  - a bit ahead of schedule and not before his mother overcame some
unexpected complications.

"Now, all is falling into place as the new mama prepares to return to work - a
place where she is so well thought of that she received a salary increase
during her absence that far exceeded the annual norm, along with a job
rating of Excellent!  She took after her father.  I wish!!"

Thanks, Wayne!  Congratulations!

and so many more Typhoons around the country/world.
We really do appreciate you, probably more than you know.  Thanks again for keeping us all in touch.

May 12, 2003

From Billy Turner ('65) in TX:

"Thought you would like to know that on May 3rd
I was re-elected Mayor of Ovilla receiving 85% of the vote.
What a tremendous vote of confidence it was to receive
such a high percentage of the votes cast.
The last few months have been filled with meetings,
speaking engagements, etc., but I have always found time
to keep up with my friends from NNHS via your e-mails.
Thank you for all of your hard work on our behalf."

Congratulations, Billy Turner (still one word)!  What fabulous news!!!

May 12, 2003

From Pam Smith Tomczyk ('65) in IL:

"I wanted to let you know - as I know you send out
mails to a broad populous - that Dave (Arnold) and I
have decided, for a number of reasons, to get married in 2004.
We are planning an outdoor wedding (maybe even at NN Park!)
because we want everyone who wants to to be able to come.
Afterwards we would like to have a big celebration.
Trust me, it won't be anything really formal -
just people getting together to be happy.
In the meantime, Dave and I are relishing our engagement.
I have to say it is so much fun to be so in love at this age -
especially with a man like Dave.
 Life just keeps getting better.
I think you feel the same way as life advances -
and I wish the same sentiment for all our classmates and friends.
Part of the increasing joy has come with 'finding' so many people again -
especially some that have become very special to me."

Thanks for the update, Pam!
The year 2004 has a nice ring to it to me!
We're excited for you and looking forward to being there with you.

I couldn't agree with you more about the joy of finding so many old friends all over again.
What a delight!

April 1, 2003

From Bruce Spigel ('65) in CO:

"Just wanted to let you know I will be moving back to
Virginia Beach sometime in April.  Looking forward to
the beach!!  It would be my pleasure to help with the
reunion committee if needed.

"Wanted to let you know, Grandson #2 was born Sunday
March 30th, to my daughter and son-in-law in Annapolis
Md.  The baby was 4 weeks early and both baby and
mother are great.  As a fluke I had found a flight to
Norfolk on Saturday and flew in to look for a place to
live for my upcoming move.  My cell phone rang in the
middle of the night and I was able to get to Annapolis
in time.  The kids were shocked that I was there as
they thought I was in Colorado.  The baby is Sheldon
Hollis Padgett, six pounds six ounces, eighteen
inches.  ISN'T LIFE GREAT!!!!"

Yes, it is.  Thanks, Bruce!

February 18, 2003

From Van Rowell ('65) in NC:

Mattie and I had a great Christmas and got a nice after Christmas present on January 23rd.  Our new baby grandson came a little early.  The proud mother is our younger daughter, Allison.  He (JD- short for James David Wightman) was born 1/23/03.  He weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces and looks just like me.  Mattie took a week off from teaching and stayed with Allison night and day for the first week.  The baby is now about 3 1/2 weeks old.  Here are a few pictures of the baby (right after he was born). See if you can pick out the one with "good looking baby", "ugly old man".
By the way, my name is "Papa".

I also have years '61, '62 & '63 with some writings in these.
If someone graduated in these years they are welcome to them."

This is an incredibly generous offer from Linwood, as these Anchors could be offered
to the highest bidder on eBay, but he only asks that "they go to a good home".

The '62 Anchor has already been awarded to Marsha Rice ('62) of Newport News.
Congratulations, Marsha, and thank you again, Linwood!

For those of you with interest in the other yearbooks (preference given to members
of the senior class represented, of course) please contact the Webmistress at
and I'll connect you with Linwood.
