Thanks so much, Dave!

When I was in Hampton this weekend, I was telling my friend, Carol "Bunny" (Green) Scott (HHS '64) about your
fantastic website. She remembers the Monkey's Paw across from the Daily Press. And one of our main stompin'
grounds in the 70's was the Checkmate on Mercury Boulevard.....everyone went there! There were live bands and
sometimes Bill Deal and the Rondells would play. When I began going there in 1970, the guys had to wear jackets and
ties, but then they could leave off the jacket if it was too hot. And the girls wore skirts/dresses......definitely not jeans.
The Checkmate was owned by Jerry Harden (HHS - '54), who also owned Barney's in Buckroe. Then he opened the
Zodiac Club behind the Checkmate. It was a private club where I began my 9-month career as a cocktail waitress.
It was lots of fun and really good money! Eventually, I had to go back to the hum-drum of civil service.
Bunny's husband also mentioned the Hullaballoo on Denbigh Boulevard and the Ebb Tide in Phoebus.

WOW!  Thanks, Gloria!  And isn't it fun looking back on all those old times with our friends?!?

Since Checkmate came up in a Newsletter, I shot the image today en route to the Vet's for meds.

Well, David, how thoughtful of you! Thank you so much! I always love getting your gorgeous images!

Hi Carol -

In the past, I have tried to remember the name of the Club/Restaurant going toward Fort Monroe - which I just read
was the CHECKMATE!! So glad to know that. Didn't they used to burn torches out front on either side of the entrance?
I remember it was unique inside and very dimly lit.   :)

- Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58) of TX - 03/20/05:
Thanks, Evelyn!

Thanks for adding the Checkmate!  I hope others will write in with their memories there.  I forgot (I do that a lot these days!)
that I worked the door there for a short time in 1971 before my illustrious career as a waitress at the Zodiac.

Thanks, Gloria!

The Green Door

- Words by Marvin Moore and Music by Bob Davie

{music includes constant "tick-tock" clock sound}

(Jim Lowe)

- peak Billboard position #1 for 3 weeks in 1956

(Midnight, one more night without sleepin')
(Watchin' till the mornin' comes creepin')
(Green door, what's that secret you're keepin?)

There's an old piano
And they play it hot behind the green door
Don't know what they're doin'
But they laugh a lot behind the green door
Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out what's behind the green door

(Knocked once, tried to tell them I'd been there)
(Door slammed, hospitality's thin there)
(Wonder just what's goin' on in there)

Saw an eyeball peepin'
Through a smoky cloud behind the green door
When I said "Joe sent me"
Someone laughed out loud behind the green door
All I want to do is join the happy crowd behind the green door

(Midnight, one more night without sleepin')
(Watchin' till the mornin' comes creepin')
(Green door, what's that secret you're keepin?)

(Green door, what's that secret you're keepin?)

Green door!!
