“Sweet is the memory of distant friends! Like the mellow rays
of the departing sun, it falls tenderly, yet sadly, on the heart.”

- Washington Irving

 Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme is being rerun from only one year ago today just because I'm such a Nat King Cole fan:

Yes, yes, I know it's Rosemary Clooney's signature song, but it's Nat who's always singing it to me!

Listed in Apprentice School records as JOHN GERALD STRUM. Completed his time (four year apprenticeship) on June 30, 1939. Was the 1,110 man to graduate from the Apprentice School. Craft number was PL-50 (PL was the abbreviation for the Plumbers' trade).

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA to the Members of the Class of 1958 - 10/01/08 - "Report from   Evelyn Fryer Fish's gathering at Buckroe, 9/27/08":

Evelyn and Dick rent the Canepa Cottage on Buckroe Beach each year and invite NNHS alums to come together on a special day.  As usual, many friends and classmates make trips from afar to reconnect and renew old friendships from high school days.
I'm sorry I was not able to attend this year as I was among the Hokies in Lincoln, NE cheering our team to victory.  I'm hoping if Ev and Dick are up to doing this again next year, it will not conflict with a VT football weekend.
I'm sure there will be additional pics coming, but for now I'm including the article from the NNHS65 website below:

OHHHH, you caught me slacking, Joe! Not only is there that large batch of beautiful images from Jean to process, but I shot a goodly number myself! The worst of it is, I haven't yet called Evelyn for an accurate number of those in attendance, let alone asked        Dimples (Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard  - '58 - of NC) to help me identify all those people I didn't recognize!  Maybe tomorrow.....

   Thanks for the giant nudge!

From Jim Dossett ('66) of FL - 10/01/08 - "68 class reunion":

OK Class of '68 --  Where are the reunion photos?
I swear, Carol, these kids today-- you just can't depend on them for anything

jim d

Well, I'll tell you, Jim. I've not received any from anyone else, but I do have a great many images from the tour of the school still on my camera. It's that slacker thing again. You know how I stall on those time-consuming projects.

There's all that PhotoShopping, for one thing. Not only must all those images be cropped and resized and compressed and saved and uploaded, but the Golden Rule dictates I need to add some creative face lifting and skin rejuvenation wherever possible.  I don't know how to perform much plastic surgery online, or I'd add a blubberectomy to all of my own images, at the very least. That would surprise everyone when they saw the Real Me, hmmm?

Well, lemme see.  I have a meeting at church tonight (I'm having a very difficult time trying to convince everyone that I'm a hermit; they just don't seem to get it.)  Then this Saturday and Sunday is the 178th Semiannual General Conference for our church, so (as is our NC tradition) I'll be over at my sister's watching it on BYU-TV on her satellite television (my cable doesn't carry it).,5161,8176,00.html

That leaves Friday and Monday.  What are the chances??  We'll see.....

   Thanks for the nudge, Jim!

From Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 09/30/08 - "Change of Email Address":

Today is my last day at DARPA and this email address. Please use the following addresses to contact me.

____________________________ my company email or ______________________ my personal email

I look forward to hearing from you.

Chandler Nelms

Thank you, Chandler Darlin'! While I was up on the Sacred Soil and Sand, a number of people asked me why we'd not heard from you lately.  Now that I think of it, Gorgeous, they were all women..... Still, isn't it good to be missed?!?

Best wishes with your new job!

From Jerry ('65) and    Judy Phillips ('66) Allen of VA - 09/27/08 - "Have a Nice Day!":

This email comes out every year in a little different way with the same wonderful message.  Every year I look for my original copy and can't find it until it's too late, so I'm always happy to receive it again.  Hope you are, too.
God bless you and enjoy this fabulous time of the year.

Every new day is a gift---all you have to do is untie the ribbon ^I^ ^I^

From one pumpkin to another!!!

A woman was asked by a coworker, 'What is it like to be a Christian?'

The coworker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.'  God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you.
Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.

He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.  Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine
for all the world to see.'

This was passed on to me by another pumpkin.  Now it's your turn to pass.

I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch.

   Thank you, Sweetie-Pies! Keep shining!

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 09/27/08 AND        Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA  - 09/29/08 AND           David Whitley ('67) of VA - 10/01/08 - "Fall Fun - You've been MOONed!!!":

He, he, he!!!

Happy Halloween!! You've been Mooned!!

We do not stop playing because we grow old;
we grow old because we stop playing.

Never Be The First To Get Old!!!!!

Why, thank you, Sweetie-Pies! It's always good to have these holiday decorating ideas on hand!

From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 09/29/08 - "Announcing the Virginia Choral Society (VCS) Fall Concerts...Oct 4-5...Hampton Roads Convention Center":

Announcing the next Virginia Choral Society (VCS) concert series, "Music of the 60s, 70s and 80s".

There will many favorite tunes from those magical and musical decades.... just a few years ago. We will be performing
at the
Hampton Roads Convention Center , Hampton, Virginia which is adjacent to the Hampton Coliseum.

VCS is a community chorus of over 100 voices and this begins our 78th Concert Season.

The concert dates and times are:
Saturday, Oct 4 at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm
Sunday, Oct 5 at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

We'll be in Ballrooms B and C and there is plenty of seating for everyone.  The HRCC provides plenty of handicap parking
and there is both an escalator and elevator for our patrons.

Ticket prices are $18.00 and $15.00 (at the door) or Advance prices are $15.00 and $12.00. For advance tickets, contact a chorus member,
visit our webpage for ticket information or call (757) 851-9114.

For group sales of 10 or more, contact Jerry Cranfill at (757) 876-7613.

For an information flyer that can be posted on your bulletin board, click here.

There will many favorite tunes from those magical and musical decades.... just a few years ago..... Back by popular demand, the VCS Rhythm Section will join us in this performance.

We're sure you'll have a great time, so get some friends and family to join us.  For a sampling of this type of music, you can listen to some music clips from our concert last fall “Music of the 50s, 60s and 70s”.

We’re very excited about this music and one of our choristers (Julie) describes the concert music this way...

Are you suffering from “Boogie Fever?” Do you miss “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)?” If so, come to the Virginia Choral Society concerts on Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, a.k.a. “Funkytown.”

Whether you attend a 4 pm or 8 pm performance, you’ll be saying “(Hey, Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” and you’ll be feeling “I Can’t Help Myself:” “With a Little Help from My Friends,” I’ll be “Dancing in the Street” and “I Will Survive!” So whether you live in “Boogie Wonderland,” “Downtown” at the “Y.M.C.A.,” or in the “Land of A Thousand Dances,” you’ve gotta “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” ‘cause “These Boots Are Made for Walking” and “There Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to keep you away from the “Chapel of Love!” Each VCS member is saying “Got to Get You Into My Life” to “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” Remember, “We Built This City,” so don’t just “Let It Be!” We don’t want to find out “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.” If you won’t put down that “Lollipop” and ride your “Yellow Submarine” to one of our concerts, we will have “One Less Bell to Answer” and it could be our “Last Dance.” So “Come Together” with us. It’s been “A Hard Day’s Night” and we “Heard it Through the Grapevine” that “You Should Be Dancing.” Let’s get “Reunited!” If you want tickets to this ‘60s-’70s-‘80s concert to hear our “Silly Love Songs,” just “Reach Out, I’ll Be There.” If that doesn’t work, call VCS at 851-9114 or e-mail us at and we’ll will be happy to mail tickets to you or place in "will call" for you, ‘cause we’ll be “Working My Way Back to You.” We want to be able to say “Then Came You!”

Advance ticket prices are $15 general admission and $12 senior/student/military. ($18/$15 at the door) Don’t be square, be there!

So...we hope to see you on Oct 4th or 5th at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

For more information, check our webpage at

And feel free to forward this along to you friends and family.

Oh, WAAAY Cool! Thanks, Sarah Sugah! Wish I could be there, too!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 09/30/08:

That e-mail I sent about the bailout had some wrong math in it.  The $425,000.00 figure actually should have been $425.00. Sorta deflates the idea.

AWWWW! How sad! I must admit, when I read the item, I did not check the math.  Instead I had the same reaction that non-musicians have when confronted with a piece of sheet music, and see nothing but black splatters on the page.

One of our sweetest, most thoughtful subscribers also noticed the error, and sent me a supremely kind note to let me let you know - but you already knew by then.  He asked that I not publish it, so I won't, but I will pass his message along to you later without revealing his identity, just because it was so touching and caring.

   Thanks, Norris!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 10/01/08 - " CBS News Articles":

Following this? If this woman, and possibly others, are guilty of this unthinkable crime, I think it makes a good argument for public hanging!

For those that believe that we crawled out of a swamp somewhere and "Evolved" (?) into what we are today, apparently the process didn't work for everyone; some look like humans, but are animals of the worst kind!

Girls Found In Freezer Likely Dead A Year

YOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI!!! This kind of cruel depravity is totally beyond my comprehension, Wayne Honey! It's difficult to imagine that such unspeakable characters even exist. I'm horrified and speechless once more.....

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 09/29/08 - "A message from PrisonFellowship":

Here is an item I thought you would find interesting.

OH, WOW! What a story! Thanks, Billy! What a contrast to the previous item - and what a lesson about the attitudes we hold, and the choices and decisions we make in life!

    From Richard Dawes (NNHS / HHS - '62) of VA - 09/30/08 - "2008 Investment advice!":

Investment tips for 2008

With all the turmoil in the market today and the collapse of Lehman Bros and Acquisition of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America this might be some good advice. For all of you with any money left, be aware of the next expected mergers so that you can get in on the ground floor and make some BIG bucks.

Watch for these consolidations later this year:

1. Hale Business Systems, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Fuller Brush, and W R. Grace Co. Will merge and become: Hale, Mary, Fuller, Grace.

2. Polygram Records, Warner Bros., and Zesta Crackers join forces and become: Poly, Warner Cracker.

3. 3M will merge with Goodyear and become: MMMGood.

4. Zippo Manufacturing, Audi Motors, Dofasco, and Dakota Mining will merge and become: ZipAudiDoDa.

5. FedEx is expected to join its competitor, UPS, and become: FedUP.

6. Fairchild Electronics and Honeywell Computers will become: Fairwell Honeychild.

7. Grey Poupon and Docker Pants are expected to become: PouponPants.

8. Knotts Berry Farm and the National Organization of Women will become: Knott NOW!

And finally...

9. Victoria's Secret and Smith &Wesson will merge under the new name: TittyTittyBangBang

   Thanks, Dicky!

 Tenderly, 1946

Music by Walter Lloyd Gross
(14 July 1909 - 27 November 1967)

Lyrics by Jack Lawrence
(b. 7 Apr 1912)

(Nat "King" Cole)
(17 Mar 1919 - 15 Feb 1965)

The evening breeze caress the trees,
The trembling trees embrace the breeze,

Then you and I came wandering by,
And lost in a sigh were we.
The shore was kissed by sea and mist,

I can't forget how two hearts met,
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside.
You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.

Your arms opened wide and closed me inside.
You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.

You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.
