                   Allen E. Feathers

RICHMOND - Allen E. Feathers, 50, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008. His final hours were spent much as he lived his life - surrounded by many people he loved and cared for.

Allen grew up in Hampton, where he was a member of Hampton Baptist Church, a graduate of Hampton High School and attended Thomas Nelson Community College. He made his home in Richmond, where he worked in the restaurant business and was an employee of Morton's Steakhouse. Allen was a treasure of talent and enthusiasm, was musically gifted and enjoyed singing in music productions throughout the Richmond area.

Allen traveled frequently and lived a life filled with friends, laughter and good company. He passionately championed the causes he believed in and tirelessly lent help and support to the people in his life. He was especially mindful to take time to share his life and love with the children in his family. Uncle Allen was always a favorite.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Virginia Feathers, and his brother, Lee.

He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Buchan and Bob, Patty Muir and Danny, and Martha Owens and Bruce; his nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Scott, Ben and Jacob Hicks; Jeff, Todd, Magun, Sarah and Chloe Muir; Noah, Elizabeth and Luke Owens; and his extended family and wonderful friends in Richmond.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Parklawn Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at Hampton Baptist Church with a reception following.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the VCU/IDC Patient Support Fund, c/o Alison Creger, P.O. Box 980413, Richmond 23298, or Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center, 707 Gum Rock Court, Newport News 23606.

Abide with Me

Words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847
Music by William H. Monk, 1861

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
