Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today. Melvin White passed away in Newport News at the age of 89.

From the Daily Press - 01/19/08:

                Melvin Crowder White

NEWPORT NEWS - Melvin Crowder White, 89, lifelong resident of Newport News, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.

Melvin was born on Sept. 26, 1918, in Newport News. He graduated from Newport News High School, where he was known as 'Whizzer' White for his ability on the football field. Studies at the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy were cut short for service in the Army as a medical corpsman during World War II. After the war, Melvin returned to Newport News, and for many years was the proprietor of White's Drug Store. He later worked in pharmaceutical sales, and retired from Bank of America as a purchasing agent. After retirement, Melvin was a mainstay of area flea markets with his 'Nostalgia Shop' and extensive collection of antique bottles. His quick wit and easy-going manner endeared him to all.

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Marjorie A. White; a sister, Winifred Bunch of Smithfield; three sons, Brian E. White and his wife, Dee, of Richmond, Barry C. White and his wife, Candyce, of Chester, and Fredric M. White of Maynard, Mass.; and one daughter, Patricia A. Jackson and her husband, Dan, of Williamsburg. He is also survived by seven loving grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Hilton Christian Church, 100 James River Drive, Newport News, with the Rev. Terrye Williams officiating. A reception/visitation will follow immediately at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Peninsula Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 377, Newport News, VA 23607; or Hilton Christian Church, 100 James River Drive, Newport News, VA 23601.
