I'm class of 72 from Ferguson HS, but I am really impressed with your site.
There's so much great nostalgia here for anyone from Newport News. I discovered it some time back
when searching for photos of WGH. Thank you for keeping it going! I especially like "Our Old Stomping Grounds".
One thing I missed in it was a listing of Skateland at Jefferson Avenue and Briarfield Road.
Who didn't attend a birthday party or sock hop there?
(Not a complaint, mind you. Just a heads-up).

- Steve Silsby (Ferguson HS - '72) of NC - 04/13/05

Well, actually, uh, I don't believe I myself ever did, Steve....  I was more of a Hygeia type kid myself.
But no matter!  Thanks for the suggestion!

Something I was thinking about during my last surgery recovery - b o r r r r r i n g - but anyway, here it comes.
I've seen on the website where someone (sorry, can't remember whomz) says that the building down on Jefferson
(at the time the most recent photo was taken, I think it was Johnny's Frozen Custard), used to be a Burger Chef.
That may be, I don't remember that one, which bytheway, is now a temp worker place. But I DO remember that
there was a Burger Chef in front of Skateland, at the corner of Briarfield & Jesserfon Anevue (my last surgery
caused occasional typing dyslexia, starting I'm to thnik). So anyways ( Roseanne Barr always says that),
back to Burger Chief. Although Skateland is gone, Burger Chef is also no longer there too, and. It is now a
Chinese fast foo (get it?) place, serving all kinds of Moo Goo Gai Funky Chicken & stuff. See if
anyone else remembers that. Or not. And maybe, just maybe, only those that are on really decent
post surgery drugs will remember. Or not. Oh yeah, I'm not still on post surgery drugs (dangit), but when this
thought came up, I were.

David, you darling man, how I've missed your goofy nonsense! I'm glad you're feeling better!
Thank you so much for your delightful and penetrating insights.

 Brand New Key

- Melanie

I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I asked your mother if you were at home
She said, yes .. but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out to see
La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
