THEN:

"Old Necking Grounds: Part II"

You know, the thing about Huntington Park was .... well ..... everybody went there to "park".  The odds of ending up next to or near your friend's car were pretty good ... and that was bad.  Even worse would be to end up next to a car containing someone who used to be there in your car or vice versa.   Very awkward, to say the least.  And there were always the "cruisers", the cars full of dateless guys just passing through to see who was there and with whom.  And on top of all of that, sometimes Newport News' Finest would patrol the area with the dreaded flashlight-in-the-window trick..... "OK, you kids, outta the back seat."  Clearly, a new and more obscure location was required.

Just such a location was Merry Point.  It was small .... maybe 8 to 10 cars could park there at any one time; it was not well known; it was secluded; it was on a dead end road so the "cruisers" were unlikely show up.  In short, the perfect spot for some privacy.

As you can see, it has long since lost many of its attributes,
but it still has a terrific view in the daytime.

For those of you still wondering just where it is ... from Warwick Blvd
at Hidenwood Shopping Center, go west on Hiden Blvd,
then go left on South Madison Lane to the end.

Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat
Paul Evans & The Curls

(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Seven little girls sittin' in the back seat
Huggin and a'kissin with Fred
I said "why don't one of you come up and sit beside me?"
And this is what the seven girls said

CHORUS
(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)
(Dee doody doom doom, dee doody doom doom)
(Dee doody doom doom, DOOM)

Drove through the town, drove through the country
Showed 'em how a motor could go
I said "how do you like my triple carburetor?"
And one of them whispered low

CHORUS

Seven little girls smoochin' in the back seat
Every one in love with Fred
I said "you don't need me, I'll get off at my house"
And this is what the seven girls said

(All together now, one, two, three)
(Keep you mind on your drivin')
(Keep you hands on the wheel)
(Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead)
(We're havin' fun sittin' in the back seat kissin' and a'huggin with Fred)

All of them in love with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Kissin' and a'huggin with Fred
(Dee doody doom doom)
Wish that I could be like Fred
(DOOM)
