Crushed by Collapsing Walls While in a  Car Wash

Senior Band: Color Guard

United States Marine Corps: Vietnam

It dawned on me just this week that Jerry Hicks ('68) passed away in 1970.
He spent 1969 in Vietnam; much of his time there was spent in combat.
After his year in Nam he came home and less than a week after getting back
was on his way to visit his grandparents in North Carolina. He stopped
to wash his car and while he was washing it, the car wash walls collapsed
and killed him.

He was a great guy and is missed by all who knew him.

- Bob Parrish ('68) of VA - 07/14/04
Thanks, Bob.

I noticed that Bobby had given you some information concerning the death of Jerry Thomas Hicks, class of 1968.  Jerry was in the US Marines, not the US Army as listed.  Jerry was killed on July 4, 1970 in Madison, North Carolina.  If memory serves me correctly, Jerry had pulled into the car wash to get out of a storm with high winds and the storm caused the car wash building to collapse and a steel beam and wall fell on him.  Actually, he had been home for several months recuperating from wounds suffered in Viet Nam, which ultimately led to his discharge from the Corps.  Jerry had called me and wanted to go the the NCO club at Langley Air Force base, but I already had a date and had to decline.  The next morning, I flew out for a year on the Korean DMZ, that was in March.  In July, I received the newspaper article of his accident.  I wish I had canceled the date; Jerry was a good friend and is sadly missed.  His year in Nam was especially hard, physically and mentally.

Thank you, Jay.

  B. W. “Wayne” Langford, Jr.

http://www.nnhs65.com/02-08-14-NNHS-Hazy-Shade-of-Winter.html

I knew Wayne. He lived on Madison Avenue near the Boys' Club when it was on Jefferson Avenue. Like all of the boys in the area he enjoyed daily attendance of the club and participated in all of the activities there. It was a safe and fun place to be. There was always adult supervision and so many things to do. Arts and crafts, athletics, wood shop, a games room, a movie room, special events, junior staff employment opportunities, day camp, leadership opportunities for the older youth and socializing with other boys his age.

There is a link to the Boys' Club on the NNHS website. The (1963) black and white picture on the first page there features a group of boys working on a project. David Spriggs ('64 - of VA) provided that picture. I am in that photo and in the striped sweater. I graduated NNHS in 1965 as did many of the others in the picture.

They would have been peers of Wayne and they all lived in the community where the club was located. Tom Oxner from NNHS '65 is not in the picture but he lived near Wayne's home and may be able to share some information. I seem to recall that Wayne was from Lumberton, N.C., and there were staff at the club who were originally from Elizabeth City, N.C. during his membership.

The thing that I seem to remember most about Wayne was that he had a sort of country-boy swagger and a look about him that seemed to hint that he knew a little more than meets the eye.

My belated condolences to his family.

- Malcolm Davis ('65) of VA - 02/09/14
Thanks so much, Malcolm!
