We were classmates from 1st grade at Woodrow Wilson through high school at NNHS. I will never forget our 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Page's son, picking you up in front of the class. He was a tall soldier then and you were so little. I heard that he was also killed in Viet Nam. We remember you with fondness.

Joseph Curry

23 Sept 1962

Killed in Car Accident Which Also Claimed His Parents

I was glad to see Joe Curry’s name in the memorial section. He died so early in our high school days that most people do not remember him.

We grew up in an awesome neighborhood near the Peterson yacht basin and were great friends until his death. Other friends in that area included: G.B. Cooper, Billy Taylor ('64), John Montague ('65), David and Terry Abbott ('66 and '65), Linda and Nelson Harris ('66 and '65), Stuart Jackson ('66), Jimmy Skates ('66), Tommy Seaborn ('66), and Annie Korycinski ('66), just to name a few. In fact I found out about his death when I went to house one morning to go to school and no one answered the door. Stuart Jackson, next door, came out and told me. I was a pall bearer for Joe.

Joe and I used to play “dice baseball” for hours and hours. It was a rather simple game to master and required only a pair of dice and baseball cards. You had to have the baseball card from Topps bubble gum of any player that you “played” in a game. It was a definite no-no to “mess with” the other guys cards. So when I would poke one of his players in the eye, thus
rendering that player temporarily useless, it was a great joy that I still remember fondly today. Many a rainy day was passed playing endless numbers of games and conjuring up trades to make our teams the best. For about four or five years we had EVERY baseball card printed. Like most kids from that time period we had no idea we had a small fortune in cards which either ended up on the spokes of our bikes or in the trash.

Probably my fondest “Joe Curry” memory happened when playing Pony League baseball. Joe was batting against me and had never gotten a hit off me. He hit a shot over the first baseman’s head. He was sooo happy going to first, jumping up and down, laughing at me, so happy that he forgot to run! The right fielder picked the ball on one hop and threw him out at first! Needless to say that gave me a couple of weeks of ammunition.

Hope I didn’t rattle on too long. But Joe and I were the definition of best friends and many times I have wondered what might have happened had he lived.

I'm the One Called "Doc…"

I shall not walk in your footsteps,
but I will walk by your side.
I shall not walk in your image,
I've earned my own title of pride.
We've answered the call together,
on sea and foreign land.
When the cry for help was given,
I've been there right at hand.
Whether I am on the ocean
or in the jungle wearing greens,
Giving aid to my fellow man,
be it Sailors or Marines.
So the next time you see a corpsman
and you think of calling him "squid",
Think of the job he's doing
as those before him did.
And if you ever have to go out there
and you life is on the block,
Look at the one right next to you…
I'm the one called "Doc".

I had heard some time ago that Allen had been killed in Vietnam but only recently learned the particulars.  He was a Navy medic assigned to a Company of U. S. Marines.  Medics were not doctors but were usually called "Doc."  The Marines called him Doc Allen.  One of them told him he had to be called Doc Allen rather than Doc Groshong because they had to be able to scream it easily if they needed him in a hurry.  He arrived in Vietnam in February of 1968 just after his 20th birthday.  He was killed in action on April 8, 1968 when he exposed himself to hostile fire to save the life of a young Marine private.  He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the third highest award given for valor in the face of the enemy. Note: thanks to the USMC Together We Served website for this information.

Sometime in the early 70's I heard that Grant had been killed in a private plane crash while traveling from Florida to Newport News to visit his parents; the plane went down in a storm.

...The Zoumplis family chose not to have an obituary in the Daily Press; hence, we do not have all the information.  I went to the funeral and it was well attended.....there were several speakers, beside the minister, who really were good friends.....Nowell was referred to as a scientist and a chemist.  He was quite bright and everyone really liked him.  There were two hymns sung by the congregation:  "The Old Rugged Cross" and it was mentioned that a favorite of his was "I Love to Tell the Story"......this was the other hymn that was sung.

The memorial folder stated that he was born December 18, 1947 and he passed away on August 31, 2013.  The funeral was at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.  He graduated from N.N.H.S. in 1966 and is survived by his wife and two adult children.  I was impressed by his family.  Nowell and his brother, the late Jerry ('61) grew up down the street from me on Sycamore Avenue, off 19th Street.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
