Frank Ferguson was a buddy. After college, he was given a commission in the United States Air Force. He was a navigator of a Radar Picket Aircraft, which was a huge Four Engine Boeing Constellation with a large dome mounted on the fuselage, and a large disk mounted below the fuselage. The Radar Picket Planes were on duty full time 24/7 protecting the east coast of the U.S. from any Soviet threat. Frank had been promoted to Captain at the time of his tragic death. His plane was taking off for patrol duty, and had just entered airspace over the Atlantic in foul weather. The plane disintegrated upon impact in the ocean. No "May-Day" messages were sent out by the crew. None of the crew were recovered in the cold North Atlantic. Fred Hayman ('57) and I drove to Massachusetts to attend the Memorial Service for the crew at Otis Air Force Base. We then drove back to Newport News and we gave the eulogy at the memorial service in his church. He had no brothers or sisters. He was devoted to his widowed mother.

- Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 06/01/04
Thanks, Joe.

Frank Ferguson was my cousin.  I remember when his plane crashed.  It was nice reading what Joe said about him.  Frank had a wife and two small children.  His mother, understandably so, was never the same after the crash.  Thanks.

- Pauline Collins Shofner ('65) of VA - 10/11/05
Thank you, Pauline.

RICHARD HUGHES KRAUSE

Richard Hughes Krause, 61, died on Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, after a long illness with heart disease.

Born in Newport News, he was a lifelong Peninsula resident. Throughout his lifetime, Dick was active in the United Methodist Church. He had a deep love for his Lord, his wife, his children and his grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, William Creasy Krause and Iris Rice Krause, also natives of Newport News.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Joan L. Krause; his daughter and her spouse, Karen Krause McCarter and William (Bill) E. McCarter, and their two children, Kelly Lynn McCarter and Matthew Ryan McCarter, of Chesapeake, Va.; and his son and his spouse, Richard Scott Krause and Theresa Rosser Krause, and their three children, Jacob Aaron Krause, Adam Christopher Krause and Bronwyn Eden Krause, of Newport News. Other survivors include his sister, Janet Krause Condo; his niece, Carol Condo Gardner; his nephew, William T. Condo; his grandnephew, Shaun Michael Gardner of Hampton; his brother-in-law, Curtis Lauterbach of Roanoke; his sister-in-law, Geneva Lauterbach; his nephew, Steven Lauterbach of Fayetteville, N.C.; his niece, Teresa Lauterbach of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one uncle, Wayne Rice of Hampton; and many cousins. Very dear friends, Sharon and John Cioffi and their family, Claire and Bill Dick and their family, and Wanda Dale and her family, will also miss him.

Dick served with the U.S. Naval Air Reserve for six years, with active duty time during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. He began employment with Newport News Shipbuilding in August 1957. He is a graduate of Newport News High School and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School.

When Dick became disabled in December 1990, he finished his career with Newport News Shipbuilding. He took great pride in the shipyard and the ships that were built there. At the time of his disability, he was assigned to the nuclear refueling of the USS Enterprise. He was among a small group of workers who also worked on her original construction.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Peninsula Funeral Home with family visitation to follow. Interment will be privately held on Friday morning at Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family of Dick Krause wishes to thank the Riverside Hospice Team for their support, kindness and love. Thanks also goes to Drs. Bryan Baines, Hugh McCormick and Dr. Robert Pusateri for the care and support they have given over the years.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, 753 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News, VA 23602, or the Riverside Hospice Program, Riverside Regional Medical Center, 500 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606.

Fred Thomas was a serious student, and a gentleman. It was not until he was no longer able to practice dentistry because his legs failed due to MD, and was teaching at the UNC School of Dentistry that many of us became aware of his condition. Then he had a serious stroke, which ended his career in dentistry. His letters were written by his nurses, and they were very sensitive and touching. The stroke and recovery gave him an experience that he wrote about extensively. He described a "white light" and was greeted by Classmate of NNHS, and then he was awakened. His nurses read every book Fred could get his hands on regarding this type of experience. While working in NYC I searched for a book that was out of print in rare book stores in Manhattan, for a particular book written by a physician who had been shot in the helmet during World War II when he was a Medic. He also had this "White Light" experience when the bullet penetrated his helmet and injured him. Later, he wrote a book about the experience and the many similar experiences of his patients. It is a small world, for a neighbor in Paoli, PA had an uncle that wrote this book, and he had about 20 copies of the book which was long out of print. Sure enough, it was the very book that Fred had been searching for and it delighted him when it arrived in Bedford, VA. Rest in Peace, Fred.
