It was really great to see someone write something about the Hygeia Skating Rink. Jane Coltrain (NNHS '64) and I skated literally hundreds of laps around that old rink back in its hay day, the 50's. I remember their having an old organ up in the attic that someone used to actually play music to skate by, but that was before my time. I think the owners then, Bill and Cecil Sheppard, recorded the organ and used that on the reel to reel that they played. I also remember Doug Carter, a graduate of NNHS and NNS&DDCO Apprentice School working there renting skates, etc.. Those were some of the more fond memories I have of Stuart Gardens and especially the Thursday nite crowd that went skating each week. I think several of Doug's brothers may have worked there also. They lived just around the corner. The building back then seemed so large but looking at the pictures you posted made me realize just how tiny it really was. Skateland, which was the one at Briarfield and Jefferson, was much larger. Thanks for posting that picture. Ah! what memories. |

Brand New Key
(Melanie)
I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need
Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl
Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I asked your mother if you were at home
She said, yes .. but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need
Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out to see
La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
