"The Old Necking Grounds"

To some subscribers these will appear as merely images of some nondescript parking lot. To others, especially from the Classes of the early and mid 60s, there will be a glimmer of recognition of this landscape, lo these 40 years hence.  Some long forgotten memories and images and aromas of White Shoulders and English Leather will be flooding back into your mind. Whispered promises, never kept, will be recalled.

To all those who know what I am talking about, you will no doubt agree with me that far more biology lessons were learned here
than in all the classrooms at NNHS.

Huntington Park... hee hee :-)
Unfortunately by the time I was old enough for the cruising and necking scene, the park
was pretty much on its way to condemnation. Parts of the lots and embankments were
blocked off to prevent such things, and Reds Pier was a memory, though I do remember
in the 60s fishing there and looking for shells and other lost items on the beach while WGH-AM
was piped over loudspeakers. The loss of WGH as we knew it is another bone to pick for another post.

What really bothered me was when someone decided to build a restaurant at the park that failed and
fill in the old swan pond. As a kid we would walk around the pond and even catch catfish in it.
I was shocked after a near 20 year hiatus to see what the park and it had become.
I had to sneak off to the side of the boat landing just to sit on a rock
for a moment of solitude listening to the waves and reminisce.
In the city of Richmond we don't have such advantages.

Well, here is another memory that is stored waaaay back in my mind... so far back it's a blur.

How many remember the train at Huntington Park being delivered on August 25, 1963 (dedicated Labor Day of same year)?
I was only in 2nd grade by then but do have faint memories of being brought to the ceremonies as a temporary track was
laid down across Warwick Boulevard. Coming from the train depot area over to the park, it traveled under its own power.
Now one memory that "is" still clear was lying in bed with the windows open and hearing the steam locomotive whistle in the
distance.  It was very dream-like, almost eerie like a faint cry as though that train knew its days were numbered.

Facts:  what we have is a K-4 Kanawha 2-8-4 class locomotive built by Lima Locomotive Works in March 1947.
Between 1943-1947 C&O purchased 90 of these between 2 manufacturers,
20 coming from Lima and numbered between 2700-2789.  Ours is #2756.

By 1952 C&O had enough of the new diesel powered locomotives to retire those
of steam and between 1957-1958 all were idle.  She was sent along with three others like her for scrap at Russell, KY but
rescued and the others remained in service until the 1970s when they did met their demise.

Only 12 of these K-4 class locomotives survive today in varied conditions, all donated to states.

Below is a wonderful picture taken by Russell Underwood of #2756 after yet another restoration in 1997 (wasn't there
one done by a Plumbing and Heating company in the 1970s?) and before the fence was replaced.  Below that is an example
of the same type of locomotive in service - to give you an idea of what they may have looked like moving.

WOWZERS!!!  Thanks, Eric!

In trying to determine the exact location of the W & S before Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA pinned it down,
I asked Ron Miller ('59) of NC if he remembered it.  I received this response from him this afternoon:

Yup! It finally came to me Sunday afternoon.
Used to take dates there, then go watch the submarine races near Red's Pier.
(I guess the reason that I didn't remember it sooner was that I was more interested in the submarine races
than the name of the drive-in ;-).  I don't have any problem remembering the races! )

- Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 01/10/05

   WILD GIGGLES!!!
Well, the more important facts do tend to remain with us more clearly, don't they?!?
Thanks, Ronnie!

Webdoll,

I reckon that about 3 a.m. I’ll remember the namesake of the Little League stadium in Huntington Park. It was named for a long-time commissioner and supporter of the National Little League, which with the East End’s American L.L. was the foundation of our talented
Typhoon Baseball teams under Jack Powers.

I misnamed my National Little League Exchange Club team manager, who was “Mr. Volhein” or “Coach.” I think now his name was “Stanley” Volhein, his son being Donald (an NNHS grad circa “57-’58). Mr. “V” worked at NNS&DD Co. I met him again at lunch time one day in August 1961. I was working on the USS Enterprise (CVN 61). He pretended to remember me. He was tolerant of a zealous, but less-successful right fielder; a batter who had a habit of “spiking the bucket” as I swing (stepping out of the batter’s box -- it’s an out).

- Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 05/14/08
Thanks, Norm!

This may be old news but the Little League baseball field was NN National Little League which was later named Lem Wheeler Field, I believe. Mr. Wheeler started Little League baseball on the Peninsula and thus was recognized by naming the field after him. I think this is correct info.
If not, Bobby Hilling ('62 - of VA) will know.

I too played for the Exchange Club for three years in the mid 50's. A less than stimulating career in Little League made me quickly realize
my life's calling was elsewhere.

- Ed Nichols ('62) of Northern VA - 05/17/08
Thanks, Eddie!

The National Little League "stadium", located in Huntington Park, for years was named after Lem Wheeler, whose daughter Joy attended Stonewall Jackson <I don't remember her being at NNHS>, that's not news, I don't remember a lot of things. That's where I played and I hope answers Norm's (Covert - '61 - of MD) memory's quest for an answer well short of 3am!

- Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 05/17/08
Thanks, Wayne!

Webdoll,

To use your words, "WOWZERS!" since my 3 a.m. memory failed me: LEM WHEELER STADIUM it is, though the Mapquest.com satellite photo doesn't seem to show my old baseball field in Huntington Park.

- Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 05/20/08
Thanks, Norm!

On Google Earth I can see clearly what I remember  as the softball diamond (1953-1955, 1961-1965)
and the baseball diamond (1961-1965).  I am not sure if Norm and I are thinking of the same locations,
so the annotated Google image is attached.

- Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 05/21/08
WOWZERONI!!! Thanks, Dave!

...Even being a little younger than most of the readers, I can vividly recall Sears and Leggett's downtown, Suttle Oldsmobile downtown, playing on the train engine at Huntington Park before it was fenced off...

- Mike Lindsay (Menchville HS - '83) of Northern VA - 02/05/16
Thanks, Mike!

Why Don't We Do It In The Road
(John Lennon, Paul McCartney)
Lead Vocal: Paul McCartney

Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
Why don't we do it in the road? Ah
Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
No one will be watching us
Why don't we do it in the road?

Why don't we do it in the road?
Why don't we do it in the road?
Why don't we do it in the road?
Why don't we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us
Why don't we do it in the road?

Ooh

Why don't we do it in the road?
Why don't we do it in the road?
Why don't we do it, do it in the road?
Why don't we do it in the road?
No one will be watching us
Why don't we do it in the road?

Paradise by the Dashboard Light
Boy:
I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake
And there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school
They were wishing they were me that night

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon! Hold on tight!
C'mon! Hold on tight!

Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light

Girl:
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Ain't no doubt about it
Baby got to go and shout it
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed

Boy:
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Baby doncha hear my heart
You got it drowning out the radio
I've been waiting so long
For you to come along and have some fun

And I gotta let ya know
No you're never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes I got a big surprise
It'll feel all right
Well I wanna make your motor run

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon! Hold on tight!
C'mon! Hold on tight!

Though it's cold and lonley in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light
Paradise by the dashboard light

You got to do what you can
And let Mother Nature do the rest
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely--

We're gonna go all the way tonight
We're gonna go all the way
And tonight's the night...

Radio Broadcast:

Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker
going here, two down, nobody on, no score,
bottom of the ninth, there's the wind-up and
there it is, a line shot up the middle, look
at him go. This boy can really fly!
He's rounding first and really turning it on
now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna
try for second; the ball is bobbled out in center,
and here comes the throw, and what a throw!
He's gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he's out!
No, wait, safe--safe at second base, this kid really
makes things happen out there.
Batter steps up to the plate, here's the pitch--
he's going, and what a jump he's got, he's trying
for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt--
safe at third! Holy cow, stolen base!
He's taking a pretty big lead out there, almost
daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
glance over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted
down the third base line, the suicide squeeze in on!
Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close,
here's the throw, there's the play at the plate,
holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!

II. Let Me Sleep On It

Girl:
Stop right there!
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further--!

Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
Do you love me!?
Will you love me forever!?
Do you need me!?
Will you never leave me!?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life!?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife!?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me!!!?
Will you love me forever!!!?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Girl:
I gotta know right now!
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
And will you love me forever?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it!!!

Girl:
Will you love me forever?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it!!!

Girl:
Will you love me forever!!!

III. Praying for the End of Time

Boy:
I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you!!!

Boy:
It was long ago and it was far away
and it was so much better than it is today

Girl:
It never felt so good
It never felt so right
And we were glowing like
A metal on the edge of a knife

As much as I love "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (seein' as I suggested it),
I have to admit that it is very long and may not be as recognizable to others as it is to me.
If you ever wish to change it and be a little naughty in the bargain, perhaps:
