The Moving Finger writes; and having writ,
Moves on; nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne:

"...auld lang syne literally means "old long since", but a more idiomatic English translation would be something like "long long ago",[3] "days of long ago", or "olden days". "For old times' sake," or "to the (good) old days," or "To days (or times) gone by" may be modern-day expressions, in common use as toasts, that capture the spirit of "for auld lang syne". Although the song begins with a question whether old times should be forgotten, the song is generally interpreted as a call to remember long standing friendships.[11] "

PRAYER REQUEST:

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of NC - 12/30/17 - " Laura Adams Harty (Cardston HS, Alberta - '95)":

Laura and I were horseback riding and her stirrup broke, and she came forward and hit her head on the ground. She absorbed some of the blow with her forearms, but is experiencing short term memory loss...

I took her to the hospital, where CT scan showed no bleeding, "just a concussion", but it's her third concussion since 2013, and appears to be the worst of the three.

She's been ordered to rest. I'm going to watch her tomorrow so we can make sure she is okay. Prayers can't hurt, for sure!

Oh, NO! We are certainly keeping y'all in our thoughts and prayers, Brent!

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 12/29/10 - "For use on December 31st":

USS ESSEX (CV/CVA/CVS-9), commissioned on December 31, 1942, was the lead ship of the largest number of large-deck aircraft carriers ever built (24) to the same design. Her design was created at Newport News Shipbuilding and she was built there (NNS Hull #392) in a remarkably short period of time. NNS also built eight sister ships of the ESSEX Class during the 1940's. Several other shipyards, using NNS plans, built the rest of that class.

Her keel was laid on April 28, 1941. Launched on July 31, 1942, she was rushed to completion by year-end. Her design was influenced by prior USN carrier operations and British wartime experiences in operating carriers in the 1939-1940 time frame. Her design proved to be extremely capable, durable and adaptable.

ESSEX participated in several campaigns in the Pacific during World War II, earning a Presidential Unit Citation and 13 battle stars. Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). In her second career she participated in the Korean War, earning four battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation.

She was the primary recovery carrier for the Apollo 7 space mission. ESSEX was decommissioned for the last time in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1975. Three of her sister ships, all built by NNS are still in existence, now serving as museum ships (INTREPID, YORKTOWN and HORNET).

WOWZERS! Thank you so much, Bill! One of my greatest joys is having so many experts such as you in our midst who generously share your wealth of knowledge with the rest of us!

Auld Lang Syne

Words believed to be written by Robert Burns, 1788[2]
(25 Jan 1759 – 21 July 1796)
(There is some thought that Burns merely first recorded these ancient words at that time.)

Set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

Chorus
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl't in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stoup
And surely I'll be mine
And we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.
