12/30/12 - NNHS Newsletter - Ring Out, Wild Bells

“Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on,
with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.”

- Hal Borland
(14 May 1900 - 22 Feb 1978)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

BONUS #2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55ngROj6qGQ -  Ring Out, Wild Bells

From http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/ring_out_wild_bells.htm

"Alfred, Lord Tennyson is considered the most representative poet of the Victorian Age in England, and many of his works characterize the conflict between the Christian faith and the beginnings of the scientific revolution. The death of his sister's fiancé, Arthur Henry Hallam, at the age of 22 plunged Tennyson into profound shock and a lifelong struggle between faith and doubt. "Ring Out, Wild Bells," generally considered a New Year's hymn, is taken from the 106th Canto of In Memoriam, Tennyson's monumental elegy to Hallam that was published in 1850, the same year that he was appointed Poet Laureate."

    From the President of the Class of 1965, Joe Wingo of NC - 12/29/12 - "Welcome back,   Malcolm and  Polly":

Dear Carol,

How nice to see Polly and Malcolm back in the flow. I would love to see greater participation from the Class of ’65, as I’m sure you would. As we get closer to our 50-year reunion, it would be great to have our class reconnect. I think I get more sentimental with each passing year!

It was also very uplifting to hear that Polly had visited
    Jamey (Douglas) Bacon ('66 - of VA). Jamey has certainly had a rough time and I know the visit lifted her spirits beyond words.

Here’s hoping 2013 is a healthy and rewarding new year for all. Carol, you need to commit to taking better care of yourself this coming year .A lot of us probably fall into that category!!

Happy New Year to the Typhoon Universe.

All my best,

Joe

   Isn't that great? Thank you so much, Joe Sweetie - Happy New Year!

  From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 12/29/12 - "Natural born":

Is this what our modern education system is coming to?

In a Purdue University classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United States. It was pretty simple: the candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age.

However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president.

The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?"

Yep, these are the same kind of 18-year-olds who are now voting in our elections! They breed, and they walk among US..........and she made it to college!!!!!

Lord -- we need more help than we thought we did!

       Thanks, Ruthie - I think!

Ring Out, Wild Bells

Music by Crawford Gates, 1948
 (b. Dec 1921)

Words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850
(6 Aug 1809 - 6 Oct 1892)

  1. Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

2. Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

3. Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

4. Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
5. Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

6. Ring out false pride in place and blood.
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

7. Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

8. Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
