Does it seem like winter where you are today? There seems to be one form of wacky weather or another everywhere.

Unless
you find this to be one of the top five most annoying holiday songs of all time
as reported by a news poll I heard several years ago, you should be able to find a
version there that you remember and enjoy.

| "Winter Wonderland" is a winter song, popularly treated as a
Christmas time
pop standard, written in 1934 by
Felix Bernard (composer) and
Richard B. Smith (lyricist).
Through the decades it has been recorded by over
150 different artists.
Dick Smith, a native of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, was reportedly inspired to write the song after seeing Honesdale's Central Park covered in snow. Mr. Smith had written the lyrics while in the West Mountain Sanitarium, being treated for tuberculosis, better known back then as consumption. The West Mountain Sanitarium is located off N. Sekol Ave. in Scranton, Pennsylvania.[citation needed] The original recording was by Richard Himber and his Hotel Carelton Orchestra on RCA Bluebird in 1934. At the end of a recording session with time to spare, it was suggested that this new tune be tried with an arrangement provided by the publisher. This excellent "studio" orchestra included many great New York studio musicians including the legendary Artie Shaw. The biggest chart hit at the time of introduction was Guy Lombardo's orchestra, a top ten hit. Singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer took the song to #4 in Billboard's airplay chart in 1946. The same season, Perry Como hit the retail top ten. Como would record a new version for his 1959 Christmas album. Due to its seasonal theme, "Winter Wonderland" is often regarded as a Christmas song in the Northern Hemisphere, although the holiday itself is never mentioned in the lyrics. There is a mention of "sleigh-bells" several times, implying that this song refers to the Christmas period... |

11:00 AM - "A Different Kind of 'Winter Wonderland' in December":

Have you ever taken a walk along the ocean on a gray, stormy and cold
December morning? Just the mention of it to some brings thoughts of
being wet and cold or just plain damp and ugly, but if you look at it
from the perspective of God's power it brings a different result. Oh, we
all love the sea when the sun is bright, the winds are light, the water
is calm and warm, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When I look
at this picture or stand in a similar setting, I see a winter wonderland
to rival any Christmas snow scene that exists. I will warn anyone who
hasn't done this, however, that make sure you respect the power of those
waves coming. If you get too close, they can carry you out to sea. The wind is strong, the waves are raging and the tide is high, yet despite it all, the seagull has the power, strength and smarts to use the wind to his advantage. He keeps the wind at his back gliding along as he looks beyond the breaker line for any sign of his next meal. It's risky business as he has to time his dives perfectly, yet the high amount of energy he must expend to fly makes it necessary. To the naked eye, however, he makes his continual quest for food look almost effortless. |

The waves breaking send salt brine flying, yet each wave is an impressive show of power with no two being exactly alike. And then I look at those pilings standing there and I wonder what they were used for. Was there a pier or an oceanside home perched atop them at some point in time past? Did it finally succumb to the power of the ocean after it was enjoyed for many years? Things like that just float through my head as the grandeur of the great sea comes clear to my sight. So, why am I saying this and what is my underlying message? Well, we who love the sea and the beach always love the calm, warm and sunny days which show us so vividly the bright and shining love and grace that God shows for us. But those cold, stormy and gray days also offer us a wonderful message from Him if we just take the time to look. That message is that He is all powerful and all knowing. We can't hide from Him or keep Him from knowing what is in our mind and He want us, mortals who were made in his own image, to live according His ways. If we believe that and believe in Him by faith, we can work hard to improve ourselves on the long road to Salvation. If we don't, well, I really don't want to find out or face His power as an adverse consequence of His disappointment with me. How about you? The choice belongs to each of us. Choose wisely.
