The Birthday of a King

"I truly believe that if we keep telling the Christmas story, singing the Christmas songs,
and living the Christmas spirit, we can bring joy and happiness and peace to this world."

 - Norman Vincent Peale
(31 May 1898 - 24 Dec 1993)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
It should come as no particular surprise to anyone that I live in a Dixie cup, but I do not recall ever hearing this carol before    Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI introduced it to me thirteen years ago.

   Thanks again, Jean!  Merry Christmas!

From My Friend, Daniel, of UT - 12/19/14:

“I greet you at this Christmas Season, in love and fellowship, and with a prayer that our Eternal Father will look down upon you in mercy and pour out His bounteous blessings upon you.

“In these times when iniquity abounds, when there are great tribulations on the earth, when there are wars and rumors of wars, we are all in need, as never before, of the guiding and preserving care of the Lord. . . .

“. . . I now pray that at this Christmas Season, and at all times, we may center our faith in the Son of God and gain for ourselves that peace which passeth understanding.”

-  Joseph Fielding Smith
(19 July 1876 - 02 July 1972)

   Thanks so much, Daniel!

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 12/20/18:

   Thank you, Joan!

  From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 12/20/19, @ 6:15 AM:

We're expecting significant rainfall this weekend, so most of my day will be out and about with heavy emphasis on making sure my horse supplies are in order. My favorite dealer will be closed for a number of days over Christmas and I don't want our "chilins" to go without grain and some special horsey treats for the big day. So, I won't be posting much today and will skip the blog for the day as well, but I'll be back in gear tomorrow and I wish all of you good luck on this day in getting all final preparations done. Then when next week arrives, if we have been smart, all will be in order and we can just slow down and enjoy. Be of good cheer, my friends, because Christmas is almost here. It will be here and then gone so fast, it is likely to make some heads spin, so savor the moments when they arrive. Now, off to the barn and to the feed store, and then there's this and that and .....

    Thank you, Jimmy! Merry Christmas!

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 12/19/19:

   Thanks, Jean!

"What is a stable?"

Every Christmas morning, when my kids were little, I read them the nativity story out of the big family bible.

When my son was old enough to talk, he asked me what a stable was.

I thought for a moment how to explain it to him in terms he could understand, then told him, "It's something like your sister's room, but without a stereo."

The Birthday of a King

Written by William Harold Neidlinger, 1890
(20 July 1863 - 05 Dec 1924)

In the little village of Bethlehem
There lay a child one day
And the sky was bright
With a holy light
O'er the place where Jesus lay.

O how the angels sang!
How it rang!
And the sky was bright
With a holy light
'Twas the birthday of a King.

Humble birthplace
But O
How much God gave to us that day!
From the manger bed what a path has led
What a perfect holy way.

O how the angels sang!
How it rang!
And the sky was bright
With a Holy light
'Twas the birthday of a King.
