From the Daily Press - 12/15/17:

                        Ernestine Morgenstern Firestone

NEWPORT NEWS - Ernestine "Ernie" Morgenstern Firestone passed away Friday, December 15, 2017, at the age of 91.

She was born August 18, 1926 to Rosaline and William Morgenstern.

She is survived by her four children, Carol Ann (Tess) Firestone, Steven Firestone (Deborah), Claudia Firestone Stiebel (Bill), and William Firestone; five grandchildren, Stefanie Fischel, Jared Fischel, Matthew Fischel (Edith), Sam Stiebel (Emily), and Sally Ein (Mark), and seven great grandchildren.

Ernestine was born and raised in Newport News, where she and her husband operated their business, Firestone Insurance.

Ernestine was a lifelong member of Rodef Sholom Temple, and the temple sisterhood.

She graduated from Johns Hopkins University as a registered nurse and was active in the Women's Army Corp. She generously volunteered her time and services to the American Red Cross's blood drives, where she supervised activities as the registered medical professional.

Over the years, Ernestine and her husband were the unofficial "welcome wagon" for prospective and new members of Rodef Sholom Temple. She never met a stranger she didn't welcome with a big Ernestine hug, and took many new transplants to Newport News under her wing and into her home.

Ernie was a gifted artist. Many family and friends have been the proud recipients of her beautiful hand knit sweaters and exquisite needlepoint creations.

She lost the love of her life, Abe, just short of their 70th wedding anniversary in April, 2016. Some of their most enjoyable times together were spent on over 40 cruises around the world. As she wished, she will now be joining him.

Ernestine will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know and love her.

Ernestine's funeral will be held graveside at the Jewish Cemetery on Sunday, December 17 at 11:00 a.m.

Donations in the memory of Ernestine can be made to Rodef Sholom Temple or to the . Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks

She took me under her wing and we shared many a laugh. This world will be a sadder place without her.

My deepest sympathy to the family. The Firestones were such a blessing to me. As a teenager I was privileged to work at Firestone Insurance as a school work study student. The things I learned there are still with me today. Sometimes people ask me why I do something a particular way, and I tell them I learned it on my first job. Mr. Firestone was the perfect boss and Mrs. Firestone welcomed me from the beginning. They always felt like family. Back in the 60's, ladies had to wear dresses, however ladies' pant suits had just become popular. When Mrs. Firestone came in to work wearing them, Mr. Firestone had to bend and let us do the same. She started a trend for us. I went on after nine years there to become a secretary in Newport News Public Schools. The training I received at Firestone Insurance was invaluable to me throughout the years. They were especially special to me when my husband was killed in Vietnam. I will never forget them and they will always have a special place in my heart. RIP
