Some Children See Him

“Christ was born in the first century, yet he belongs to all centuries.
He was born a Jew, yet He belongs to all races. He was born
in Bethlehem, yet He belongs to all countries.”

- George W. Truett
(06 May 1867 - 07 July 1944)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I needed some gentleness today, and I think this 1951 Christmas song fits that bill.

From My Friend, Daniel, of UT - 12/13/14:

“Jesus . . . descended below all things that he might rise above all things and comprehend all things. No man descended lower than the Savior of the world. Born in a stable, cradled in a manger, he travelled from there to the cross through suffering mingled with blood to a throne of grace; and in all his life there was nothing of an earthly nature that seemed to be worth possessing. His whole life was passed in poverty, suffering, pain, affliction, labor, prayer, mourning and sorrow until he gave up the ghost on the cross. Still he was God's firstborn son and the Redeemer of the world.”

- Wilford Woodruff
(01 Mar 1807 – 02 Sept 1898)

    Thanks so much, Daniel!

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 12/15/17:

   Thank you, Joan!

From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 12/15/21, 7:59 AM - "Good morning, Typhoons, on this Hump Day.":

Good morning, everyone, and a special wish for a special Hump Day on this first of the remaining two during the Christmas season. Even Clyde loves to play Santa, so join in on the fun, but only after you've made it to the summit later today. Be blessed, know that God is in charge of all things, and use your faith and love for Him in a positive way and show the world what can be accomplished when we follow His blessed ways. Smile and have fun along the way. God bless you all.

   Thank you, Jimmy! Merry Christmas!

BAH HUMBUG POLL:

From Me ('65) of NC - 12/14/15 - "Top Five Most Annoying Christmas Songs":

I love Christmas carols and songs, probably much more so than most people.....

There are, however, a few songs out there which simply drive me up the wall, and I think chances are excellent that there are some which affect you in the same way. I doubt they are really the same ones so, wondering which ones were your top five, I thought it would be fun to share. Remember, these are just opinions. One man's ecstasy is another's exasperation. I'll begin:

1. Taylor Swift - Last Christmas - Someone please restrain me; I have a very strong urge to wring her neck. No, on second thought, lemme at her.

2. Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - Bruce, how can I say this politely? Just. Shut. UP!!!

3. John Lennon - So This Is Christmas - My daughter assures me I am interpreting this exactly backward from its true intent, but it sounds condescending and highly disrespectful to me. Sorry, I can't seem to drop that thought. So shoot me, just don't inflict that song on me again.

4. Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time Is Here - I know my selection of this borders on heresy, and that this beloved theme song to the Charlie Brown Christmas Special is supposed to be soothing and gentle, but it makes me want to throw things. It reminds me of wimpy soft rock music, which I cannot abide. If you want to rock, put on some Metallica, crank up the volume, and quit being a jerk. If you want it to be beautiful, let's hear from Frank Sinatra and the rest of the crooners singing ballads.

5. Jose Feliciano - Feliz Navidad - This song has been on the top of my list for many, many years. The fact that it's been demoted to fifth place shows you just how annoying I find those other four songs. It could have been a good song, if it had, oh, I dunno, some more actual lyrics, and another singer whose voice didn't grate so hard on the nerves. I would have nominated Julio Iglesias, but no one asked me.

   Your turn!

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 12/14/14 - "Giving - assisted by gravity":

WOWZERONI!! Thank you so very much, Bill! The word has become grossly overused, but that man is one amazing individual!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 12/14/16:

Thank you so much, Jerry! I've always loved this painting!

 Merry Christmas!

From Mark Hutcherson ('66) of VA - 12/14/16:

   Thanks, Mark! Merry Christmas!

- Marilyn Monroe

BONUS CHRISTMAS GIFT CROCHET PATTERNS:

Hi-Top Slipper Socks - "Crochet a pair of colorful sneakers to keep your feet warm and cozy! Choose from the many colors of this yarn for your favorite color. But be careful who sees you in them, because they’ll want you to make them a pair!"

Keep It Cool Cozy - "This crocheted cozy lets everyone know your favorite team while keeping your drinks extra insulated."

Gift Pocket Scarf - "A pretty picot edging provides a soft feminine touch to this easy crocheted scarf. Warm your fingers as well as your neck in the pockets at each end!"

BONUS CHRISTMAS RECIPES:

Amish Poppy Seed Bread - "Poppy seed breads are a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty, but this one's a special easy treat from Georgia."

Glazed Carrots and Parsnips - "Any dish that's delicious and nutritious works for us and these Glazed Carrots and Parsnips certainly fit the bill!"

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 12/13/10 - "Most Dangerous Cake Recipe in the World":

Most Dangerous Cake Recipe in the World

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE COFFEE MUG CAKE!!

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla essence
1
large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to your largest mug and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using), vanilla essence, then mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (This can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now you are only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

   WOWZERS-YOWZERS! Thanks again, Shari!

Make out your Chopin Liszt early before Debussy season, when you have time to check out Verdi good bargains are, can still get gifts Faure good price, not have to Handel large crowds and have time to give Bach things you decide you don't want.

 Some Children See Him

Words by Wihla Hutson, 1951
(1901 - 24 Mar 2002)

Music by Alfred S. Burt
(22 Apr 1922 - 06 Feb 1954)

Some children see Him lily white,
The Baby Jesus born this night,
Some children see Him lily white,
With tresses soft and fair.

Some children see Him bronzed and brown,
The Lord of heav'n to earth come down;
Some children see Him bronzed and brown,
With dark and heavy hair.

Some children see Him almond-eyed,
This Savior whom we kneel beside,
Some children see Him almond-eyed,
With skin of yellow hue.

Some children see Him dark as they,
Sweet Mary's Son to whom we pray,
Some children see Him dark as they,
And, ah! they love Him, too!

The children in each diff'rent place
Will see the Savior Jesus' face
Like theirs, but bright with heav'nly grace,
And filled with holy light.

O lay aside each earthly thing,
And with thy heart as offering,
Come worship now the Infant King.
'Tis love that's born tonight!
