12/10/08 - NNHS Newsletter - Bobby Yevak
John Robert Yevak
Newport News High School Class of 1965
Friends and Schoolmates,
I am grieved to report that we have yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter tonight. Bobby Yevak, Class of 1965, and brother of Pete Yevak ('67) of VA, Karen Yevak ('69), Shannon Yevak Leskin, and Tommy Yevak, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 in Aventon, North Carolina at the age of 61.
From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 12/10/08, 8:03 PM - "News":
A few minutes ago I received a call from Bobby Yevak's son, Jay. I'm sorry to tell you that on Tuesday Bobby suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. The family is in Rocky Mount, NC, and will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 at the Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. Please ask the Typhoon family to keep Dawn, Michele and Jay in their thoughts and prayers. I'm sitting here an remembering how much fun Bobby had seeing every one when he married Pam (Smith Arnold - '65 - of VA) and me.
Oh, noooo! I'm deeply saddened to hear this, Dave. Thank you for letting us know.
From the President of the Class of 1965, Joe Wingo of NC - 12/10/08, 8:12 PM - " Yevak":
I assume you know about this already?
I just learned of it, Joe Sweetie - thanks!
From Me ('65) of NC - 12/10/08:
Bobby called me a couple of months ago - was it in August? September,
perhaps? - as he did from time to time. We would laugh a lot, recalling the
fun we had in high school, particularly in
Mrs. Baab's junior English class. We would
talk at length of life and lost loves and religion and the economy and God and
politics and the philosophies of men. Very often we would cry together, as
our hearts remembered
Rose (Woodard Davis Ficocello Groff)
('65) or other dear friends who had gone before,
and opportunities lost, and deeds left undone, and words left unsaid.
This was before November when we had so very many deaths, but there had been quite a number in a row. Bobby said to me, "You know, soon now, it'll be one of us, one of our own classmates."
I said, "Yes, I know."
After I hung up, knowing of Bobby's battles with Crohn's disease and leukemia, I thought to myself, "But not you, Bobby, not you."
When Edna (Johnson Matthews) ('64) passed away, his words struck me again. They returned just last week when David Smith ('64) died as well.
And now, I can only think once more, "Not you, Bobby. Not you."
Rest in peace, dear friend. I shall sorely miss you.

Words by John Newton, 1779
Amazing grace! (how sweet
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!
Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis'd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.
