“A Christmas candle is a lovely thing;
- Eva K. Logue
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Guess what?!? It's St. Nicholas Day! That's right! We celebrate this day together every year (even if we don't personally celebrate it, and personally, I don't know anyone who DOES celebrate it). But, HEY! It's December, and surely there's something to celebrate - or remember - every day this month!
This particular Holiday Edition repeats each year:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/12-06-04-NNHS-Happy-St-Nicholas-Day.html - Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/12-06-06-NNHS-Happy-St-Nicholas-Day.html - Santa Claus Is Coming to Town
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/12-06-08-NNHS-Happy-St-Nicholas-Day.html - Here Comes Santa Claus
BUT - this year it falls on Sunday (and the second Sunday in Advent, at that!), so I thought (as I'm ever on the alert for the obscure and the abstruse) we'd take a different approach, and go back to its origins in our observance.
BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpUBBau9TXs - Innu lil San Nikola ta' Bari / Hymn of St. Nicholas of Bari - This is the sing-along version, particularly if you're fluent in Maltese.....
"In the main square of the village of Siggiewi in Malta. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of this village and many people in the area are called Nicholas or Nichola as is the custom. People who hail from the village of Zebbug nearby are often called Philip or Philippa after their patron saint."

THIS DAY IN 1964:

Sunday, December 6, 1964 - Socialite Consuelo Vanderbilt, Duchess of Marlborough (b. 02 Mar 1877 in New York City, New York) died at Southampton, Long Island, New York.
From Bill Black ('66) of GA - 12/05/09 - "Beecroft and Bull Closing":
sadness, I noticed Beecroft & Bull in
Hilton Village was closing. I bought
the first suit I ever paid for myself ( with my
stage crew home room money, paid in cash
Miss Crane ) back in the fall of 1966. A
brown window pane plaid... Back in the old days, gentlemen were expected to
wear a jacket and tie on dates.
I'm sure a couple of the girls remember how soft the shoulder was... Modesty prohibits me from mentioning any names. If I could remember any of them by something more than "Miss September, "Miss October", "Miss November", that is.
Thanks, Bill! You're a hoot!

Just got back from Myrtle Beach yesterday after almost a whole week and read the Monday Newsletter. I can now access the Newsletter, thank goodness. There were WAGS and SWAGS as well as Phishing and that turned into the biggest reason I had a S.N.A.F.U.

From ArcaMax Jokes - 12/05/09:
Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper?
Groceries are heavier.
And, everything is farther away.
Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become!
And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they're red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader?
I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn't even recognize me.
I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own refection ......... Well, REALLY NOW- even mirrors are not made the way they used to be!
Another thing, everyone drives so fast today!
You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the freeway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror.
The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank, but in reverse. Do they think I actually believe the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling?
I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on -- but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they've printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in here!
All I can do is pass along this warning: We are under attack! Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO WE CAN GET THIS CONSPIRACY STOPPED!
