As Lately We Watched

"Off to one side sits a group of shepherds. They sit silently on the floor, perhaps perplexed, perhaps in awe, no doubt in amazement.
Their night watch had been interrupted by an explosion of light from heaven and a symphony of angels.
'God goes to those who have time to hear him' -- and so on this cloudless night he went to simple shepherds.

- Max Lucado

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I hope you'll enjoy this lovely old Austrian hymn.

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 12/03/06 - "An AMERICA holiday memory":

This email (and its attachment) are being sent to a number of family and friends who lived in 'Shipyard Virginia' when downtown Newport News was...well, downtown!

You will undoubtedly recall some (or all) of some of my memories of 'Christmas past' there...

Enjoy!

PS - I put all your addresses in the 'blind copy' category - to protect any of you that might be innocent (although I suppose few, if any, still qualify).

WOWZERONI-RINI!!!  Thanks so much for this wonderful Christmas remembrance, Bill!

From  Charlie Snead ('64) of NC - 12/03/06 - "A lesson from geese... Wonderful pictures and Blessed lessons...Hope you enjoy":

Carol, if this gets to you I hope it will open. I seem to remember a lot about "teamwork' back at NNHS...band, football, you name it. We were very successful in so many of those areas. We had some really good teachers in those days...huh ?

Charlie

I was indeed able to open it, Charlie - and it was both beautiful and informative!  As I knew I wasn't going to be able to attach a Power Point show to share this wonderful message with the others, I Googled the title to see if it might be available in another form, and sure enough, I found it both pretty and plain:

http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/curr/char_ed/stories/anecdotal/geese.html

Thanks so much, Charlie!    We were so very blessed to have the teachers and leaders we did to instill these principles deep within us.  What a debt of gratitude we owe them all!

From Me ('65) of NC - 12/04/06 - "Alumni Page":

I spent a few hours this afternoon adding images to the Alumni Page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/alumni-list.html

This is going to considerably simplify my life in preparing Newsletters.  I hope you'll enjoy it as well.  I'd like to hear from those of you who are dial-up users.  It may very well be that the page will need to be split into parts to be easily uploaded.

It's only about half done, so don't panic if you don't see your own portrait there.  Don't look for any logic in who came first to be added either.  My methods are too goofy to be divulged...

From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 12/04/06 - "Rantin' and Ravin'":

Dear Carol,

Congratulations, from one pot-stirrer to another, on your wonderful gumbo of a newsletter. As for me, I like a good rant from time to time. Cuts the sweetness of the cute puppy pictures and fond memories of our Wonder Years, and wakes up the little grey cells.

Well, I'm glad you appreciate the wild array, Chris! WILD GIGGLES!!!

So add this little bit of "shrimp" to the gumbo pot. (I'm 4'11" but my mouth is full size.)

I agree with    Dale Harty's assessment of the illegal immigration issue. I have little to add because he has so eloquently covered all sides of this very complicated problem.  I've lived in Los Angeles for over 30 years and am also falling victim to nostalgia for the "old days" when we were a sleepy collection of villages in search of a city. I was speaking to my 83 year old friend, Marri Wallace, the other day about "the problem" of immigration--both legal and illegal--in Los Angeles. I found myself beginning to rant about the poor drivers in my neighborhood, those "____ Soccer Moms."( Fill in the blank with your particular prejudice.) She told me she remembers long ago when people said Los Angeles was "just being ruined" by one particular ethnic group: the Okies! (Remember your Steinbeck?)

One of my new All Time Favorite Movies is the film "Crash." If you want a snapshot of what life is like in Los Angeles, (and increasingly in other parts of the country) this is the film to see.

I am prejudiced against prejudice. 'Nuff said.

Typhoons Forever, We'll Always Have Buckroe
Chris Starkman

Thanks, Lady!  I love your last statement about prejudice!

As Lately We Watched

As lately we watch'd o'er our fields thro' the night,
A star there was seen of such glorious light.
All thro' the night, angels did sing
Carols so sweet of the birth of a King.

A King of such beauty was ne'er before seen,
And Mary His mother so like a queen.
Blessed be the hour, welcome the morn,
For Christ our dear Saviour on earth now is born.

His throne is a manger, His court is a loft,
But troops of bright angels, in lays sweet and soft,
Him they proclaim, our Christ by name,
And earth, sky and air straight are filled with his fame.

Then shepherds, be joyful; salute your new King,
Let hills and vales ring to the song that ye sing.
Blessed be the hour, welcome the morn,
For Christ our dear Saviour on earth now is born
