12/03/19 - NNHS Newsletter - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
It's always good for us to pause
And think awhile of Santa Claus--
That jolly symbol we revere
When we approach the changing year.
Behind his beard so long and white,
In which our children take delight,
There beats a heart from color free
Which bids all children 'come to me.'”
- Marshall M. Morgan, “The Spirit of Santa Claus

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

It's time for a fun Christmas song.

BONUS - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - Jimmy Boyd (age 13), 1952

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is an American Christmas song with music and lyrics by Tommie Connor.

The original recording by Jimmy Boyd on 15 July 1952 when he was 13 [1] reached #1 on the Billboard charts in December 1952, and on the Cash Box chart at the beginning of the following year. The song was commissioned by Saks Fifth Avenue to promote the store's Christmas card for the year, which featured an original sketch by artist Perry Barlow, who drew for The New Yorker for many decades.

The song describes a scene where a child creeps down from his bedroom to see his mother kissing "Santa Claus."

Boyd's record was condemned by the Roman Catholic Church in Boston when it was released on the grounds that it mixed kissing with Christmas, ignoring the fact that mistletoe, under which many couples kiss, is traditionally hung in many homes during the Christmas season. Boyd was photographed meeting with the Archdiocese to explain the song. After the meeting, the ban was lifted.

BONUS RECIPE (Sorry; not particularly theme-related):

From Me ('65) of NC 12/02/15 - "Pristine White Muffins":

This is my favorite quick bread recipe; I've been enjoying it for forty-eleven years.

Pristine White Muffins

3 cups self-rising flour
8 Tbsp. sugar
8 Tbsp. white shortening
1-1/2 cups cold water

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix together flour and sugar. Cut in shortening with a pastry cutter. Then mix by hands until crumbly. Slowly add the water while mixing to form a soft dough. Drop pieces of this wet dough into ungreased muffin tins. Bake 15 minutes until they start to turn tan.

Somehow, these taste even better at room temperature, so make them ahead if you are able. able.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Words and Music by Tommie Connor (1904-1993), 1952
Recorded by Jimmy Boyd (09 Jan 1939 – 07 Mar 2009)

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night
She didn't see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep
She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom fast asleep

Then I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night
