NEWPORT NEWS - Virginia Shackelford Poindexter, a lifelong resident of Newport News, died Tuesday, November 28 at the age of 91. Mrs. Poindexter, daughter of Henry Harrison Shackelford and Virginia Host Shackelford, was the widow of John E. Poindexter.

Mrs. Poindexter, known as Gina to her family and friends, graduated from Newport News High School and attended Sweetbriar College before returning to Newport News.

She then married John Poindexter in 1948. After living for a year in Louisville, KY, they settled in Newport News, where Gina became an active member of the community.

She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, where she served in the Church Circle. She was also a long time member of the Hampton Roads Garden Club, where she was a Tri Color award winner for her beautiful flower arrangements. Gina was also a charter member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads and remained active for more than 20 years.

She had a great love of animals, beginning in her youth when she was a very active equestrian. She once rode at stables located on the property of what is now Christopher Newport University. Gina was also a talented needle pointer. She created many beautiful pieces, and carried her needlepoint bag with her everywhere.

Gina is survived by her three children, son, John E. Poindexter, Jr, of Madison, OH; and daughters, Abby Poindexter Bing (John) of Richmond, VA, and Amanda Poindexter Wood (John) of Newport News.

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Words by Walter C. Smith, 1876
Music (St. Denio) by John Roberts, 1839

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
But of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart
Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart.

All laud we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee,
And so let Thy glory, Almighty, impart,
Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.
