Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

There is sad news this Wednesday.  Devera Samuels Wilks-Belkov, Class of June 1947, widow of Seymore Wilks (June '46) and Leonard Belkov, passed away in Hampton on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the age of 88.

From The Daily Press - 11/28/18:

                        Devera Samuels Wilks-Belkov

NEWPORT NEWS - Devera Wilks-Belkov passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, in Hampton, Va. Devera was a resident of Newport News, Va.

Born on Aug. 13, 1930 in Newport News, there is no doubt Devera lived a very full life surrounded by love, adventure, laughter, and joy.

Devera attended Newport News High School where she made many life-long friends, including her high school sweetheart and first love, Seymour Wilks.

Devera loved traveling and seeing the world, but her life's biggest joys were found in the moment she spent with her large, loud, and fun family. As matriarch of the Wilks family, she loved nothing more than having all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren around the dinner table to break bread.

Devera's world travels took her all over the Far East, Aruba, London, Amsterdam, Alaska, and so many other places, making new and lifelong friends along the way.

Devera was a dedicated member of Rodef Sholom Temple for 63 years where she could often be found producing, directing, and enjoying Cabaret with her family. Devera was also a participating member of the Temple's Sisterhood, held many active roles in the Peninsula Community Theater, and a lifetime member of Hadassah.

Devera never met a stranger, and was always giving to those she cared for and loved.

Devera's heavenly welcoming party includes: parents, Fred and Tillye Samuels; husbands Seymour Wilks and Leonard Belkov; great grandson Kinston Carter Wilks; and many friends who were her chosen family in life.

Carrying on Devera's memory, spirit, and laughter are her four loving children, Andrew Wilks (Cindy), Joel Wilks (Karen), Lon Wilks (Debra), Marci Wilks-Davis (Christopher); eight adoring grandchildren, Steven Wilks (fiancée Lauren Steere), Michael Wilks (Jennifer), Adam Wilks (Ashley), Austin Wilks, Brandon Wilks (fiancée Cassie Moore) Ryan Wilks, Kevin Wilks (Emma) and Stuart Wilkins; and three great grandchildren, Olivia, Hannah and Audrey Wilks.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Rodef Sholom Temple, 401 City Center Blvd., Newport News, VA officiated by Rabbi Gilah Dror. Burial will immediately follow at The Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I love you, Mom. Thank you for being the woman you were and making me the woman I am today!

Devera was my mother's cousin. That doesn't even begin to describe the impact she had on my family's life. We spent Passover and many other days at her house with Seymour and the kids. If we weren't at her house, she was often at ours. I lived abroad for 15 years and always tried to see her, and my cousins whenever I came home to visit. My daughters were able to get to know and love her well. I am so happy and grateful for that. Devera, I will never forget you, I love you.
