11/27/12 - NNHS Newsletter - I Hear You Knocking

“It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear
the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.
”

- K. T. Jong

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   Here's another great golden oldie.

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbdOEE5LvIw - I Hear You Knocking - Smiley Lewis, 1955

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Hear_You_Knocking:

"I Hear You Knocking" (sometimes spelled "I Hear You Knockin'") is a popular rhythm and blues song with emphatic syncopation, written by Dave Bartholomew and Pearl King and published in 1955. The original recording was made by Smiley Lewis, reaching #2 on the Billboard R&B singles chart in 1955.

The lyrics concern a former lover whose knocking at the door will not be answered. A similar lyrical theme appears in the earlier songs "Keep A-Knockin'" (1935) and "Open the Door, Richard" (1947), to which "I Hear You Knocking" may be considered an answer song.

The song was popularized in 1955 in a cover version by Gale Storm in a recording on Dot Records catalog number 15412, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts. The song reached #3 on the Cash Box Best-Selling Record chart...

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 11/26/12 - "Suggested theme for Newsletter.":

Hi, Carol:

How about a theme that will honor
Capt. Brent Harty USA (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90 - of TX)..."Burning Heart" by Survivor (Theme song for the movie Rocky iV). The line in that song causes me to think of him..."In the warriors code there is no surrender, though the body says stop, and spirit says never (paraphrased)."
Surely someday he will be a Professor of History at Virginia Military Institute!!!

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Dear Sweet Adonis, as you may have noticed I've spent more time this week sick in bed than working at my keyboard, but even in my weakened, medicated condition, you still seem to be able to read my mind. Somewhere in mid-November I determined that if I revisited as many old Newsletter themes from previous years as I could, I could speed up production and possibly catch up. The problem was I had nothing for November 29 - and you just solved that problem! Thanks so much!

Thank you for your nice thoughts about Brent, too!
He left on Monday for a three-week training of some kind or other, so your prayers on his family's behalf would be greatly appreciated. I know he will feel as honored by your suggestion as I do; I'll tell him when next he calls.

Thank you so much, Jay Sweetie! With the memory of a military funeral for a friend of mine who gave his life protecting his men still fresh in my mind, this really touched me.

From My Daughter of Other Parents, Megan Fulmer Mansfield (Marshall HS, TX - 2002) of MD - 11/26/12:

     OOOH - pretty!  Thanks, Megan!

Hmmm - that tree skirt looks familiar... The similar one I crocheted myself last year is still hiding in the "safe place" where I so lovingly placed it it January. If I don't find it soon, I'm-a gonna hafta crochet myself another one. That's okay, because I'll have two trees. It's just not how I had chosen to spend my time. I had planned to be all finished with my Christmas decorating by now, but of course I hadn't planned to spend this week sick in bed, either. At least I can crochet in bed!

Kiss all your pretty babies for me!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 11/26/12:

A pipe burst in a doctor's house. He called a plumber. The plumber arrived, unpacked his tools, did mysterious plumber-type things for a while, and handed the doctor a bill for $600.

The doctor exclaimed, "This is ridiculous! I don't even make that much as a doctor!."

The plumber quietly answered, "Neither did I when I was a doctor."

 I Hear You Knocking

Written by
Dave Bartholomew (b. 24 Dec 1920) and Pearl King, 1955

Recorded by Smiley Lewis (05 July 5 1913 – 07 Oct 1966), 1955

You went away and left me long time ago
And now you're knocking on my door

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

I begged you not to go but you said goodbye
And now you're telling me all your lies

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

You better get back to your use-to-be
'cause your kind of love ain't good to me

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

I told you way back in 52
That I would never go with you

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been
