11/25/17 - NNHS Newsletter - Arlene Goodson Davis

Arlene Cecelia Goodson Davis
(30 Dec 1928 - 22 Nov 2017)

Newport News High School Class of 1946

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   There is still more sad news today. Arlene Goodson Davis, Class of 1946, passed away at her home in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the age of 88.

   Sister of Carl Goodson of VA and of VA and Myra Goodson Jessen of VA, and of the late   Betsy Goodson Covert (June 1937) and  Christine "Tena" Goodson Hensel (January 1939), she was the mother of Cecelia Davis Smith ('65) of SC and John Davis ('66) of SC.

   Her nieces and nephews include    Harry Covert ('57) of MD,    Norm Covert ('61) of MD, and  Rachel Covert Paquette ('64) of MD, and the late Fayetta Covert Stansbury (NNHS / Ferguson HS - '72) (11/23/54 - 06/03/10), and Sherry Hensel Huycke ('69) of VA and Lori Hensel Asby of VA.

  From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 11/24/17, 12:13 AM - "Death of Arlene Cecelia Goodson Davis":

Webdoll, it is with a heavy heart that I report the death, Nov. 22, 2017 of my loving Aunt Arlene Cecelia Goodson Davis, NNHS Class of 1946. She was living in Charleston, SC at the time of her death. She would have been 89 Dec. 30. Her daughter Cecelia and son attended Newport News High School, I believe Class of 1965 and 1966, respectively.

She is to be buried in Charleston beside her husband, William F. Davis. She was predeceased by my mother Mary E. Goodson Covert (1937) and my Aunt Christine Goodson Hansel (Jan. 1939).
It is a double whammy for me owing to the fact that today is my late sister Fayetta's 63rd birthday. She died in 2012 from a brain tumor. Fay was an NNHS band member who was heartbroken to be transferred to Ferguson (Class of 1972) when the courts decreed it.

The Lord has his plan whether I agree. Aunt Arlene was such a loving Aunt to me and I will miss her quiet words of wisdom.

Norm Covert ('61)

   Oh, I am so very sorry to learn this, Norm. Holiday passings of our loved ones evoke such tender feelings. I offer you and your family my deepest condolences.

Lead Me Gently Home

Words and Music by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(07 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.

* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
