Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

   There is more sad news this early Saturday morning.        Nancy Michie Grenier, Class of June 1947, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012 in Newport News at the age of 82.  Among her seven surviving siblings are  Dot Michie Pittman (June '40) and   Faith Michie Newcomb (June '45).

NEWPORT NEWS - On Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, Nancy Lee Michie Grenier, 82, passed into eternal rest surrounded at home by her family.

Nancy was born in Newport News, Va., to Louise Phillips Michie and John Frederick Michie. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1947 and married Joseph 'Joe' T. Grenier in October 1949. In her early years she worked as a secretary to a general at Langley AFB, Hampton, and later drove a school bus for the special education program of the Yorktown School System.

Later in life Nancy decided to pursue a professional career and graduated from Thomas Nelson College as a registered nurse in 1972. She continued her education and graduated from ODU with a BS in nursing in 1982.

 

 
 

 

 

Nancy worked at Hampton General Hospital, Hampton Convalescent Home, was director of nurses at the Pines Convalescent Home in Williamsburg, and prior to retirement she worked as a home healthcare nurse. In addition to her active professional life, Nancy was president of the Women's Missionary Union at Deer Park Baptist Church, volunteer secretary for the Rev. Waverly Horne, and was an active member of Deer Park Church.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joseph T. Grenier; her son, Joseph T. Grenier Jr. and his wife, JoAnn; her daughter, Cheryl Grenier and Cheryl's friend, Rory Johnson; and her grandsons, Jason T. Grenier, Eric M. Grenier, and Travis E. Grenier, all of Newport News. She is also survived by seven brothers and sisters, John Frederick Michie Jr., Joseph Michie, Jerry Leggett, Dorothy Pittman, Coretta Pepe, Faith Newcomb, and Maryann Parker. Nancy will be greatly missed by all.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 26, at Deer Park Baptist Church, 826 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral, and also at a reception following the funeral, in the church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, in Mausoleum of Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Riverside Hospice Unit, 12420 Warwick Blvd., Suite 6E, Newport News, VA 23606, or to the Alzheimer's Association , Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Megan, Laura, and Marie of the Riverside Hospice Unit for their compassion, skilled care and especially their companionship to the family during Nancy's illness.

Joe and family,
We are so sorry to hear about Nancy. What a joyous time it is in heaven now with my mom, Betty and Nancy being reunited. Nancy was such a wonderful person and I know you will miss her tremendously, but you have a special angel watching over you now. Keep your memories close to your heart and cherish the happy times you all had together.
