From the Daily Press - 11/15/18:

              Charles F. Allen

    NEWPORT NEWS - Charles F. Allen, 80, of Newport News went to his eternal home on Sunday, November 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

A 1957 graduate of Newport News High School and alumnus of Old Dominion University, Charlie was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a marine designer in the Newport News Shipyard for 20 years as well as many other marine design companies in the area.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He enjoyed teaching his children the values of life, how to repair or replace just about anything broken, taking camping trips and making s'mores, and he loved attending and supporting all of them in their activities whether it be scouts, sports, dance, band, or science fairs.

Charlie Allen

  Charlie was competitive in everything and passed his competitive spirit to all of his children. He always taught them not to sweat the small stuff and had a great sense of humor, believing that laughter is good for the soul. He treasured spending time with all of his family and looked forward to family gatherings. He loved Elvis tunes and was a great dancer. Known as Pop-Pop to his grandchildren, Charlie delighted in teaching them how to fish, play sports, camp, and share laughs.

He loved his church family and missed them when he couldn't attend services or functions as often in the later years. Charlie was loved by many and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. 'Red' and Laura F. Monfalcone Allen of Newport News; his two brothers, John and Fred Allen, as well as two grandchildren, Brooke Snyder and Ethan Staton; and one niece, Jennifer Allen.

Charlie leaves to cherish his memory his loving high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 60 years, Sonja Settles Allen; 5 children, Dana Coyne-Kuhn and her husband, John, of Kitty Hawk, NC, Keith Allen of Newport News, Melissa Allen of Richmond, Stacey Cepukenas of Newport News, Lisa Staton and her husband, Max, of Chesterfield; one sister, Faye Andrashko and her husband, Gary, of Irvington; one brother, Richie Allen of Newport News; three sister in-laws, Mary and Gwen Allen of Newport News, and Belvie Turner and her husband, Jimmy, of Belhaven, NC; seven grandchildren, Patrick and Michael Coyne, Jackie and Sam Kuhn, Alyssa Niechlanski and husband, Brian, Zach and Dominik Cepukenas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 17, at the Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23601.

A celebration of life will follow and be conducted by the Rev. Tom Tipton at the Peninsula Funeral Home with a reception at Christ United Methodist Church, 133 Deep Creek Road, Newport News, VA 23606.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org or Special Olympics at www.specialolympics.org. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Abide With Me

Words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847
Music by William H. Monk, 1861

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
