11/15/09 - NNHS Newsletter - It Never Was You

“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling
deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments,
propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start
searching for different ways or truer answers.”

- M. Scott Peck
(22 May 1936 - 25 Sept 2005)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

In contrast to yesterday's song which I've known for most of my life, I never recall having heard this one before.  Having heard it now, I'm not likely to forget it again.

BONUS # 1 - - It Never Was You, Judy Garland, 1963

BONUS # 2 - - It Never Was You, Julie Andrews, 1992 - slide show

BONUS # 3 - - It Never Was You, Anne Kerry Ford (with John Boswell on piano), 2006

BONUS # 4 - - It Never Was You, Megan Mullally - no video - I tend to forget from time to time that this very funny gal has a great set of pipes

BONUS # 5 - - It Never Was You, Kiri Te Kanawa (recording session with Andre Previn, Mundell Lowe, and Ray Brown, on piano, guitar and bass) - WOWZERS!!!

      From John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - 11/15/09, 11:52 AM - "Nor'easter":

Hi Carol -

In Va. Beach this event for us was worse than Isabel. We had some siding blown away, a small tool shed was demolished and limbs down from my GIANT live oak. No damage to the roof tho; and all the people and barn-yard animals, including the Meercats, are traumatized but well.

Blessed and thankful!

John and Nancy London

PS: I doan know what the camel is about - I just thought it was kool and I never used it before - so there.

Behold! What is a bell? A bell is that which sounds, far, and high ... It will echo far and wide like the peal of thunder but under utmost purity. And evil men, hearing the bell, will be saved.

YOWZERONI! I'd call that substantially more than the "minimal damage" you mentioned yesterday, but then I'm a well-known weenie!

Thanks so much for your report, John!

   P.P.S. Love the camel!

Happy Birthday today to    the late Bobbie Whitehurst Canady ('57) of VA (deceased 11/16/07) AND       My Niece, Shari, of VA!

Happy Birthday tomorrow to    the late George-Morewitz ('57) (deceased 06/09/08)!

   Happy Birthday this week to:

17 - Ronald Creech ('57);

18 -   Joe Drewry ('58) of VA AND    Jane Coltrane Leonard ('64) of VA AND   Ann Allen ('65) of NC;

21 -   Rose Woodard Groff ('65) (deceased 10/14/84)!

Many Happy Returns, One and All!

November 15, 1943 - Heinrich Himmler, the leader of the German SS, ordered the imprisonment of Gypsies and "part-Gypsies."

Sunday, November 15, 1964 - Footballer Stelios Aposporis was born in Athens, Greece.

From John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - 11/14/09, 2:34 PM - "To a special lady.":

Carol -

This brief note is to let you know that my household and immediate neighbors in Va. Beach survived the Nor'easter with only minimal damage.

Now this;

I wonder if you know what a treasure you are? The labor of love you perform on-line for all your extended classmates may have greater value than even you know about. The forum that you provide for us (even the WHS types like myself) is not only fun and informative, but has become a warm and comforting place where sorrows are sometimes shared, honors are bestowed, and happy life events are celebrated.

Your love for family, friends, and classmates rings clear like a bell.

You do it all so well - thanks for all you do!

~ John London

Now; if you could just learn to spell ROSI-RONI-REEEEENI-ROOOONEEE or whatever tha heck that is ....

Now 2; I know about your modesty, girl, but post this anyhow!

John Sweetie, when I stopped sobbing, I marveled at how perfectly timed was the arrival of your note. It was one of those moments when I was feeling rather crummy, and almost - almost - decided in my mind that most of y'all were without power now anyway, and it wouldn't really hurt if I simply crawled back into bed and said, "Oh, phooey, no one will even notice."

Thank you - so very, very much!

   P. S.  I would have said, "WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI-ROOTIE-TOOT-TOOTIE!!!", but that would have been insensitive under the circumstances!

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 11/14/09 - "How Many?":

Dearest Carol,

I'm afraid you misunderstood about my having fun with you. It was not how many you answered right but how many there were. 25 not 20.
That's the only way I'll ever catch you because you're soooooo very much smarter than I/me?/I.

     25?!? Where is that test?

Now I don't know how many I answered and how many I missed.... Ah, well, I toldja was a zombie!  If and when my full faculties return, I'll try it again!  And there's no real evidence to substantiate your next remark, but I thank you for the compliment!

Betty got through the surgery but had to go right back in for a blood clot. She's having a rough time but she is alive.

When I went to see her today she was only semi-awake but I still got a smile out of her. When she ask how she looked I told her just like Attila-the hun---- the 1932 movie version- not the cartoon.

Laughter is one of the best forms of healing, Linda May!  I tried to find a reference for your movies (I wanted to see the picture), but I struck out there, too.  I only found this one which is listed in this same source as both 1954 and 1958 (?!?), but as you're much more of an authority on old movies than I, I bow to your words:

I, too, miss
      Herbie (Hice [22 Oct 1924 - 18 Apr 2008] ) still.

I know that you do, Lady! He was a special treasure and a rich blessing to us all, always sharing, always caring - and not a one of us ever met that dear man!

   F.A. (Saunders - Hampton HS - '64 - of VA) 's picture looks to be 1940/41.

Much love, Linda May '66

   Thanks again, Linda May!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 11/13/09 - "I Started as a Geedunk Officer by     Bill Marriott":

From Mickey Marcella ('54) of VA - "Boys Club in Downtown Parade":

Real Smart

This one happened few years ago in Switzerland: A man went to a photo shop, had pictures taken, and - while the photographer developed the pictures - he took off with the cash register.

Leaving behind, of course, the pictures of himself.

It Never Was You

Lyrics by Maxwell Anderson
(15 Dec 1888 – 28 Feb 1959)

Music by Kurt Weill
(02 Mar 1900 – 03 Apr 1950)

For Knickerbocker Holiday, 1938

I've been searching through rains
And the wind that follows after
For one certain face
And an unforgotten laughter
I've been following signs
I've been searching through the lands
For a certain pair of arms
And a certain pair of hands
Yes, I tried a kiss here
And I tried a kiss there
For when you're out in company
The boys and girls will pair
But it never was you
It never was anywhere you
An occasional sunset reminded me
Or a flower hanging high on a tulip tree
Or one red star hung low in the west
Or a heart-break call from a Meadow Lark's nest
Made me think for a moment
Maybe it's true
I found him in the star
In the call
In the blue
But it never was you
It never was anywhere you
Anywhere, anywhere you
