Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

    We have yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.  Toby Greenspon Morewitz, Class of about 1930, mother of the late    George Morewitz ('57) and   Sally Morewitz Seltzer ('62) of VA, and mother-in-law of  Steve Seltzer ('61) of VA, passed away at The Hidenwood Retirement Community in Newport News on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the age of 99.  May her memory be for a blessing always.

NEWPORT NEWS - Toby Greenspon Morewitz, 99, died on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at The Hidenwood Retirement Community.

Mrs. Morewitz was raised in Newport News, graduated from Newport News High School, and was a secretary for the Veterans Administration in Hampton. She was the oldest living past president of the Rodef Sholom Temple Sisterhood and held that position at the time of the Temple's dedication in 1960. She was a past co-chairman of the Women's Division of the United Jewish Appeal and was also active in the Newport News chapters of Hadassah, Council of Jewish Women and Women's American ORT.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Morewitz; and son, George B. Morewitz, owners of I. Greenspon Furniture Store.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally M. Seltzer and her husband, Steven; daughter-in-law, Teresa Morewitz; former daughter-in-law, Judy Morewitz; grandchildren, Laura Seltzer, Jill Konopaske (Gregg), Steven Morewitz (Laney), Mark Morewitz, Andy Morewitz (Eric Stein), Brian Morewitz (Kira), Aaron Woolard (Pam); and great-grandchildren, Catherine and Casey Morewitz, Sydney and Sophie Konopaske, Miles and Georgie Morewitz, and A.J. and Ryland Woolard; as well as her sister-in-law, Frances Hordes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family has requested private graveside services. They will be conducted by Rabbi Gilah Dror at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula in Hampton.

The family wishes to thank all the wonderful people who have taken care of Toby with great love and respect, especially Mrs. Elizabeth Jefferson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Louis Morewitz Scholarship Fund, Christopher Newport University, Office of Advancement, 1 University Place, Newport News, VA 23606 or Heartland Hospice, 11835 Fishing Point Drive, Newport News, VA 23606.
