From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 11/06/09 - "Famous Marine nominee.":

Hi, Carol:

Hope you had an enjoyable trip and arrived back home safely.

May I recommend  Captain John Llewellyn USMC for your Famous Marine page?

He is a combat veteran of the Korean War, who attended NNHS before transferring to Staunton Military Academy.

Below is a link to his "Shadow Box" profile at Marines-Together We Served.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joseph Madagan

   Thank you, Joe!

Oh, crum, this is a password-protected site, and once again, I'm not exactly eligible to gain entry.  I don't think anyone would seriously accept this image that our late darling       Herbie Hice (22 Oct 1924 - 18 Apr 2008) made of me for my birthday three years ago as sufficient proof.

I miss that Herbie so! Anyway, Adonis, let's try again to add Captain Llewellyn to our page!

From My Daughter-in-Law, Diana Lyons Harty (Portsmouth HS, NH / Eastlake HS, CA - '05) of MA - 11/06/09 - "USAA CEO Announces Expanded Member Eligibility":

Thought you might be interested in this, since           Dale (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - '02 - of MA) told me that you and         Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) and your children weren't able to take advantage of this way back in the day.   Dale and        Buckley and I are all registered and do quite a bit of our business with them, and we've had a really good experience and think you may as well, if you choose.  Anyway, here you go!

Welcome to All Who Have Honorably Served

Dear Mrs. Harty:

I hope you agree that all men and women who have honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces deserve to do business with a financial services company that understands their unique needs, appreciates their service and does the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

Your USAA Board of Directors believes so, and I am very pleased to let you know that USAA membership is now open to anyone who has honorably served in the U.S. military.

Starting with our first eligibility expansion in 1923, the USAA family has grown by embracing an ever-larger portion of America's active duty, retired and separated military members. Each time, we have been careful to ensure that USAA has the financial strength, the staff and the technology to maintain our high standards for exemplary member service, competitive pricing and value. Opening our doors today to all veterans who have honorably served, regardless of dates or length of service, fulfills our mission and leaves no one behind.

If you know veterans who honorably served but haven't become USAA members, please share this news with them by clicking on the "Share USAA" button so that they may know the value of USAA and, by joining, their spouses and children can enjoy the benefits of membership as well.

Josue (Joe) Robles Jr.
Maj. General, USA (Ret.)
President and CEO

USAA membership is a privilege earned by those in uniform — and it's a privilege that can be handed down to their children.

Have questions about joining? Call 1-800-531-6597

Thanks so much, Diana! As this is a new service being provided, I thought I'd "share it with the class!"

From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 11/06/09 - "What year was this shot???? anybody know?":

Thanks, F.A.! All I can say is, it's a bit before my time. Well, before my time in Newport News, anyway!

   "Anyone? Anyone?"

From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA -  11/06/09 - "Thousands send early Christmas cards to dying 5-year-old Noah Biorkman | Detroit News - -":

   Thank you so much, Cookie!

   Y'all know what to do!

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 11/06/09 - "What is confidence?":

What is confidence?

A hypothetical situation where 20 CEOs board an airplane and are told that the flight that they are about to take is the first-ever to feature pilotless technology: “It is an uncrewed aircraft.”

Each one of the CEOs is then told, privately, that their company's software is running the aircraft's automatic pilot system.

Nineteen of the CEOs promptly leave the aircraft, each offering a different type of excuse.

One CEO alone remains on board the jet, seeming very calm indeed.

Asked why he is so confident in this first uncrewed flight, he replies: “If it is the same software that developed by my company's IT systems department, this plane won't even take off!!!! ."

That is called Confidence!!!

   Thanks, Ruthie!

From My Friend, Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 11/06/09 - "An Idea For Your Outside Xmas Decorations":

  I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

I think this is priceless.  Look at the house to the right.  You may want to do some similar decorating this Christmas...

   This is priceless, Jude, thanks!

From Jane Chambers of VA - 07/01/09 - "CNC BOOK BROCHURE & AD":

Police Quotes

"The handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll stretch out after you wear them awhile."

"If you run, you'll only go to jail tired."

"So, you don't know how fast you were going. I guess that means I can write anything I want on the ticket, huh?"

"Yes sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I am the shift supervisor?"

"Warning! You want a warning? O.K., I'm warning you not to do that again or I'll give you another ticket."

"The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or dog?"

"Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven."

"Life's tough, it's tougher if you're stupid."

"No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to have quotas, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we want."

"Just how big were those two beers?
