November 5, 1940 - The British Armed Merchant Cruiser, HMS Jervis Bay, was sunk by the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer.

November 5, 1942 - The Second Battle of El Alamein was won by the British in El Alamein, Egypt.

November 5, 1943 - Bombing of the Vatican: a Fascist Italian aircraft, departing from Viterbo, dropped five bombs on Saint Peter's Basilica.[1].

Thursday, November 5, 1964 - Lawyer and politician Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer (b. 30 Sept 1893 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland) died in Upper Marlboro, Maryland at the age of 71.
