11/04/19 - NNHS Newsletter - Helplessly Hoping

On with the motley, the paint and the powder,
The people pay thee and want their laugh, you know.
If Harlequin thy Columbine has stolen,
Laugh, Punchinello, the world will shout 'Bravo!'

Go hide with laughter thy tears and thy sorrow,
Laugh and be merry, playing thy part,
Laugh, Punchinello, for the joy that is ended,
Laugh for the pain that is breaking thy heart.”

Ruggero Leoncavallo, from the opera I, Pagliacci, 1892
(23 Apr 1857 - 09 Aug 1919)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Are we not all helplessly hoping for something or other?

BONUS - Helplessly Hoping - Crosby Stills and Nash

"Helplessly Hoping" is a 1969 song by American folk rock group Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It was released on their album Crosby, Stills & Nash and as the B-side of the "Marrakesh Express" single.

The song is noted for its use of alliteration in its lyrics. It was written by Stephen Stills as he went through a painful break-up with Judy Collins, herself in therapy at the time. This, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "49 Bye-Byes" were frank dissemination of his longing to help her through her difficulties juxtaposed against her inability, not unwillingness, to accept his aid as she struggled in therapy and eventually allied herself with Stacy Keach.

Thanksgiving Table Setting Idea - "Not a fan of orange and brown? No worries; your table's color palette doesn't have to be restricted to traditional fall colors. Instead try softer, cooler hues like the whites, pale greens and grays found on heirloom-variety pumpkins. Use fresh greenery, like waxy magnolia leaves or feathery evergreen boughs, to add texture and color around the base of the centerpiece. Tuck collected pinecones and nuts into the arrangement to celebrate nature's bounty. Beautiful turkey feathers from a local farm are nestled among fresh magnolia branches to decorate the chandelier as a subtle yet elegant nod to the feast's main course."

From - 11/03/19:

One summer evening, a 3-year-old came in while his parents were setting the table for supper. Quite surprisingly, he asked if he could help. His mother said, "No, but I appreciate your asking."

The child responded, "Well, I appreciate your saying no."

Helplessly Hoping

Written by Stephen Stills (b. 03 Jan 1945)

Recorded by Crosby, Stills & Nash, 1969

Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye

Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other

Stand by the stairway
You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other
