Newport News High School Class of 1943

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

There is more sad news this Saturday morning.        Beverly Koch Wilkins, Class of 1943, passed away in Newport News on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the age of 87.

Her husband, the late Buck Wilkins (d. 09 Aug 2003), was one of those heroic young men who left school to fight in WWII and returned to NNHS to graduate later.

If I'm not seriously mistaken, their daughter, Lynn Wilkins (Duffy), was the same    Lynn Wilkins who was with the Class of '65 at least through the sixth grade at Magruder School, after which the family moved from Stuart Gardens and she transferred to another school, probably Ferguson High.

From the Daily Press - 08/13/03:

                     Charles Buckley Wilkins

NEWPORT NEWS - Charles Buckley "Buck" Wilkins departed this life on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003. He was 78. Mr. Wilkins was a lifelong resident of Newport News, residing briefly in Waynesboro, Va., as a young man while attending Fishburne Military School. His high school career was interrupted by World War II during which he served in the United States Navy's Atlantic fleet. He returned from overseas in 1944 and graduated from Newport News High School soon after. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Priddy Koch, in 1945.

Mr. Wilkins was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to three grandchildren. His circle of friends grew large throughout the years and included many neighbors and coworkers. He worked for Suburban-Rulane Propane and was later employed by Newport News Shipbuilding for 37 years retiring in 1990.

He leaves behind Beverly, his beloved wife of 58 years; a daughter, Beverly Lynn Duffy; a son, Kevin Buckley Wilkins and his wife, Lisa Furr Wilkins; and two grandsons, Ryan Buckley Wilkins, 18; and Robbin Anderson Wilkins, 11. He is also survived by five nieces, Myra Golden of Wolf Creek, Mont., Peggy Tienken and Bobbie Sweat, both of Richmond, Susie Roberts of Gibsonia, Pa., and Patty Arnold of Newport News; as well as many grand nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in passing by his parents, Herbert L. and Marguerite R. "Totsy" Wilkins; two brothers, Walter L. Wilkins and William Wilkins; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Carl E. Mericle officiating. Burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family requests that any memorial gifts in lieu of flowers take the form of contributions to individual favorite charities.

NEWPORT NEWS - Beverly Priddy Koch Wilkins traded the trials of this life for the joys of heaven on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012.

Beverly was born July 5, 1925, in Newport News, Va., where she remained as a third-generation lifetime resident. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1943. It was there that she met her sweetheart and husband-to-be, Charles Buckley "Buck" Wilkins. The two were married in 1945. After a brief employment, as a draftsperson, with Newport News Shipbuilding & DryDock Co., Beverly dedicated herself to the job of being the most wonderful wife and mother that any family could ask for. She walked faithfully and lovingly with her husband through challenging health issues. She unforgettably enriched the lives of all three of her grandchildren by caring for them in their early years while their parents worked. Her lifelong love of gardening would often prompt her to rise early to complete the day's housework so she could spend the rest of her day outdoors, where her handiwork abounded in a yard full of colorful, beautifully kept beds of plants and flowers.

Beverly was preceded in death by her dear parents, William R. Koch Jr. and Lucille "Tootsie" Priddy Koch; her beloved husband of 58 years, Buck; and by her cherished granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn, with whom God saw fit to reunite her on the anniversary of her birth date.

Beverly is survived and dearly missed by her daughter and caregiver for the last nine years, Beverly Lynn Wilkins; son, Kevin Buckley Wilkins and his wife, Lisa Furr Wilkins; grandsons, Ryan Buckley Wilkins and Robbin Anderson Wilkins; and three great-grandchildren, Kimberly Ruth "Ruthie" Wilkins, Nathaniel Buckley Wilkins, and Joshua Riley Pearson. She is also survived by much loved first cousins, Ann Lee Malone Taylor, Jack Priddy Malone, Robert Bernard Malone, and Kenneth Gene Stultz; second cousins, Lucy Ann Taylor Smith, Laurie May Taylor Burmeister, Kenneth Gene Stultz Jr., Gary Doyle Stultz, Barbara Lee Priddy Forster, Thomas D. Priddy, and David G. Priddy; and by her nieces via marriage, Myra Wilkins Golden, Peggy Wilkins Tienken, Suzie Wilkins Roberts, Bobbie Wilkins Sweat, and Patty Wilkins Arnold.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Peninsula Memorial Park, officiated by Pastor Carl E. Mericle.

The family requests that gifts, in lieu of flowers, take the form of a donation to the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 739 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite 1006, Newport News, Va.; www.alz.org/seva.

You never really know how much you love someone until they pass on. May you find peace and comfort knowing that she lives on in the memories and the dreams of those who remain behind and that one day you'll be together again.

I'll Fly Away

Written by

Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away

I'll fly away oh glory
I'll fly away (in the morning)
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly
I'll fly away

Oh how glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
