WILMINGTON - Merle Padgett Dowding, 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Wilmington, NC on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

She was born in Newport News and graduated from Newport News High School. She attended Cincinnati Bible Seminary and worked for First National Bank in the IBM Dept.

She was an avid gardener, and bridge and tennis player. Merle lived life to the fullest and was fun loving, kind, a snappy dresser, and most importantly, never boring.

She is survived by her children, Anne D. Dobson of Wilmington, NC and Phillips M. Dowding, Jr. of Newport News, and her grandsons, Charlie and Chris Dobson.

She was fondly known to her grandchildren as "Baba". The neighborhood children enjoyed Merle's beautiful garden and old fashioned Coca-Colas in her garden house.

A Celebration of Merle's life will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 at 4:00pm at Weymouth Funeral Home with a reception to follow at the funeral home.

In memory of Merle please perform a random act of kindness.

In the Garden

Words and Music by Charles Austin Miles, 1912
(07 Jan 1868 - 10 Mar 1946)

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

I'd stay in the garden with Him
'Tho the night around me be falling
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known
