Joseph Wayne Sparrow

CHANCELLOR, S.D. - Joseph Wayne Sparrow, 65, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at the Lennox Good Samaritan in Lennox, S.D. Wayne Sparrow was born Feb. 20, 1940, in Newport News, Va., to Woodrow and Nellie (Terry) Sparrow. He grew up in Newport News and graduated from Newport News High School in 1957. Wayne then attended Nuclear Welding School. He worked as a welder at the Newport News Shipyard for 40 years, retiring in 1997. He was very proud that he had worked on the USS Reagan. Wayne was united in marriage with Theresa Van Steenwyk on Jan. 23, 1993, in Hampton, Va. They moved to Chancellor, S.D., in March of 2003. He was a member of the Chancellor Baptist Church, the Warwick Moose Lodge #1711 and the Legion of Moose in Newport News. Wayne was a husband and father and provider for his family in Virginia. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Theresa Sparrow of Chancellor, S.D.; son, Terry Joe Sparrow of Hampton, Va.; daughter, Teresa Meyers of Hampton; brother, William Sparrow of Virginia; four stepchildren, Shawn Church, Christine Church, Thomas Van Steenwyk and Andrew Van Steenwyk; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, a brother, Fred Sparrow, preceded him in death. Memorial services and a Moose Ritual will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Miller Funeral Home Downtown. Sorry to hear about Uncle Wayne. I'm Teresa Alley's granddaughter. I grew up across the street from Woodrow & Nellie.
