10/21/18 - NNHS Newsletter - Whispering Hope

“Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul,
and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all.”

- Emily Dickinson
(10 Dec 1830 - 15 May 1886)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Originally, the theme of today's Newsletter just seemed a natural choice to me, following as it does Whispering Grass. Then I began listening to the videos, and I realized it went a little deeper than that. I hope they touch your heart as they did mine.....

The paint used must be animal friendly. Some of these are super cute.
I cannot see my furry friends allowing me to dress them up, so to those who get their animals to oblige - what a miracle!

   Thanks, Shari!

Whispering Hope

Words and Music by Alice Hawthorne, 1868
(11 May 1827 - 22 Nov 1902)

"Alice Hawthorne" was really Setimus Winner, one of the most versatile writers of the mid-19th century.
Winner went from the bird calls of "Listen to the Mocking Bird" to the doggerel nonsense of "Oh, Where,
Oh, Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" to the gentle and optimistic "Whispering Hope."

Soft as the voice of an angel,
Breathing a lesson unheard,
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word:
Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done,
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.

Refrain:
Whispering hope, oh, how welcome thy voice,
Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice.

If, in the dusk of the twilight,
Dim be the region afar,
Will not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star?
Then when the night is upon us,
Why should the heart sink away?
When the dark midnight is over,
Watch for the breaking of day.

Hope, as an anchor so steadfast,
Rends the dark veil for the soul,
Whither the Master has entered,
Robbing the grave of its goal;
Come then, oh, come, glad fruition,
Come to my sad weary heart;
Come, O Thou blest hope of glory,
Never, oh, never depart.
