Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

    I am saddened to bring you another Memorial Edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.  Louise K. Gabel, mother-in-law of    Judy Anker Gabel ('65) of Northern Virginia, passed away at a hospital in Northern Virginia on Monday night, October 18, 2010 at the age of 89 after being hit by a school bus earlier in the day.  May her memory be for a blessing always.

We were saddened to read in the paper that Judy Anker Gabel's mother-in-law, Louise Gabel, was hit by a school bus on Monday, and passed away.  Jon and Judy were just saying at the reunion picnic on Saturday how active she was for 89.

Woman hit by school bus dies


10.19.10 Update:
An 89-year-old Falls Church woman died Monday night after she was hit by an Arlington County school bus earlier in the day.

Arlington County police said Louise Gabel was struck by a school bus driving along its normal route at about 7:30 a.m.

The bus turned at the intersection of Carlin Springs Road and South 8th Road and struck Gabel.

There were 12 children on the bus at the time of the crash, and none of them were injured, police said. The bus and its driver remained on the scene, and Gabel was taken to an area hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not yet publicly identified the school bus driver.

Original post: Arlington County police say they are investigating an accident that happened about 7:30 a.m. Monday when a school bus struck a pedestrian at South Eight and Carlin Springs roads.

Police said the woman was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

Twelve children were aboard the bus, which was on its regular route and remained on the scene. None of the children were injured, police said.

The accident is under investigation. People who witnessed the incident or have information may call Det. Paul Marseilles at 703-228-4237.

  On Monday, October 18, 2010 of Falls Church, VA.

Beloved wife of the late Richard Gabel; loving mother of Susan (Donald) Poretz, Jon (Judith) Gabel, Carol (Charles) Berlin, and David (Janet) Gabel; sister of Judith Endelman; loving grandmother of Jeffrey, Michelle, Stephen, Joshua, Brad, Karen, Eric, Deborah and Terrence. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

A Funeral service will be held at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Rd., Alexandria, VA on Wednesday, October 20 at 1 p.m. Interment King David Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington Community Foundation, Glen Carlyn/Carlin Springs Scholarship Fund, 2525 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington VA 22201 or to the Falls Church-McLean Children's Center, 7230 Idylwood Road, Falls Church, VA.
