Sloop John B “Not going home is already like death."
-
E. Catherine Tobler, Vanishing Act |
![]() |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
When I first
began making this page, I attached the music first, as is my custom. I
couldn't quite remember the words, but when I checked to make certain the
music was functioning, I was suddenly filled with incredible sadness,
without knowing why. Then I added the lyrics, and knew.
I wanna go home, too..... |

- "Dear Carol, My Mother getting her first Horseback riding lesson":
Dear Carol,
You know how I love my mother. Here is a picture of her getting her first horseback riding lesson from my older sister. You notice she didn't even need a saddle, that's how good she was. More pictures of interest to follow. Your Friend, Herbie |

Oh, how wonderful!!! I see where you derived your great sense of humor, Herbie! This reminded me of an old photo of myself. It's a well known fact that I am one of the greatest wimps of all time, hence the nicknames bestowed upon me by my sons - "Biggus Wimpus" and "Wienius Maximus". |
|||||
![]() |
What is less well known is the fact that
one day I was actually persuaded to sit on a real live horse. The
photo doesn't show it, but he was an exceptionally large horse - as in very
tall. And I'm not sure my abject terror is making it through onto the
film, either. I mean, he kept moving! My horsies on the Buckroe
Carousel never did any such things!
Oh, sure, they went up and down and round and round, but they didn't
wiggle while they did it!!!
Thanks for the memory, Herbie Darlin'!

Thought about you and

Ahhh, good old Edwardsville! That
exit would have led you to several of my children, too!
Just returned to Florida, and do not miss that wind
on the Plains. All is well, and hope Paul has some good news for us
by now.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
Well, Joe, actually, we've heard nothing yet. At this point, I'd be delighted to hear from the Unemployment Commission again - this time with an actual check. One would think if one's employment ended on June 30, that by October 18, one or two unemployment benefit checks might have arrived. This has not yet happened. Had it not been for the generosity of all you wonderful people, we would have been out on the street long before now - particularly in light of the fact that we had some major unexpected (or actually, forgotten) expenses. Sigh.. Perhaps tomorrow......... Thanks, Sweet Adonis!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA to the Class of 1964 - 10/15/06 - "NNHS 60TH
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION":
Fellow Classmates.
I wanted to thank all of you for attending our
Birthday Celebration. I hope that you had a memorable evening.
I also hope that you took lots of candid photos of
your classmates, of Ms. Kanter ... and of
"THE KING".
I know that those who could not attend (and other
NNHS classes) would love to see all of your
photos. The best way to make that happen is to let Carol Buckley Harty
('65 - of NC) place them on the NNHS Web Page.
And, the best way to do that is to send them all to me, so that I can
archive them to my hard drive before sending them along to Carol.
You can attach them to e-mails, if you wish, but I
can handle any media.
For e-mails, send them to:
nnhs64@cox.net
For "snail mail" send them to: NNHS CLASS OF
1964, P.O. BOX 6387, Norfolk VA 23508-0387
It was great seeing all of you.
TYPHOONS FOREVER,
Dave Spriggs

Party -
Thanks!":
Hi Carol, Had hoped you would be in town for our 60th party. Missed you. Well, thanks, Nancy, I would have loved to have been there! It looks as though y'all had a fabulous time, but I wasn't invited as at "only" 59, I'm just too, too young! WILD RAUCOUS GIGGLES!!! Thanks to everyone responsible for our grand 60th
Birthday Party. The location and food were fantastic. Since we come from out
of town, it was especially nice to have one hotel where we could gather. Our
special “guest” brought back memories too. What a hoot! |

Dear John: I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy--will you let me be yours? Jane Dear John: I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. From Bob Allen, Vice-President of the Class of 1951 - 10/17/06 - "NNHS Class of 1951":
Carol:
We had our 55th reunion with 78 attending Crown Point Plaza dinner last Saturday night and another 36 staying for breakfast. We had good service and GREAT food. All the checks had been sent to me, so when we got such good food...from all the thanks I received, one would think I had cooked the food...all I did was collect the money and reserve the place 18 months ago. Female Committee members decided on the food...which was outstanding.
I took video and put copies on DVD for
distribution to selected contributors who could not attend; and with
Roy Dunkun (Helen Halls' husband) and my combined photos on a
CD...will do same...we have approx 90 excellent portrait style photos of
everyone attending.
We have a Committee meeting in December to
review the event and plan when the next one will be.
PS--few teachers are still alive...two were
invited...none came. one : Miss Hardy sent a letter which was
read...
Is this by any chance the same
Miss Hardy whom the later classes knew and loved as
The combined classes of Feb and June had
approx 200 members...68 are deceased.
Bob Allen, Vice Pres, class of 1951
NNHS....
Your reunion sounds like
a great time, Bob! I'll try to make you a page for your report as soon
as possible! Thanks for telling us!

Dear
Carol,
I know you are very busy with the Newsletter BUT, Every now and then, You must slow down and Take Time To smell the ROSES ~~~~~ Honey, if I
got any slower, I could open up my own molasses factory!
Please open this up and
enjoy the beautiful Pictures and a song of Inspiration. Then you can go back
to your Newsletter and Feel Good about Life in General ~~~~~ If I did take the time to watch this beautiful PowerPoint show, Herbie. It was beautiful, indeed! And as a Latter-day Saint, I don't drink coffee at all, but as I watched this show this morning, I was sipping my curiously refreshing glass of, um, lukewarm water containing one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Yes, it is disgusting, but I drink it first thing in the morning every morning anyway. BLEUCHHHK! I will remind you that
I like my Coffee as I like my Women ~~~~~ HOT ~~~~~ BLACK ~~~~~ and ~~~~~

Sloop John B
- Brian Wilson
(The Beach Boys)
We come on
the sloop John B
My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the mainsail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I wanna go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
I wanna go home
The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sheriff John Stone
Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the mainsail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I wanna go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
(Hoist up the John B's sail)
Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I wanna go home
Let me go home
The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the mainsail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I wanna go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
