200 YEARS AGO TODAY:

October 15, 1815 - Napoleon I of France began his exile on Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean.

THIS DAY IN WWII:

October 15, 1938 - German troops occupied the Sudetenland.

October 15, 1938 - The Czech government resigned.

October 15, 1944 - The Arrow Cross Party (very similar to Hitler's NSDAP (Nazi party) took power in Hungary.

October 15, 1945 - The former premier of Vichy France Pierre Laval was shot by a firing squad for treason.

October 15, 1946 - Hermann Göring, a Nazi war criminal and founder of the Gestapo, poisoned himself just hours before his scheduled execution.

THIS DAY IN 1965:

Friday, October 15, 1965 - Vietnam War: The Catholic Worker Movement staged an anti-war rally in Manhattan including a public burning of a draft card; the first such act to result in arrest under a new amendment to the Selective Service Act.

Friday, October 15, 1965 - Bodybuilder Nasser El Sonbaty was born in Stuttgart, Germany. He died in his sleep on 20 Mar 2013 while visiting Cairo, Egypt at the age of 47.

Friday, October 15, 1965 - Mathematician and academic Abraham Fraenkel (b. Abraham Halevi (Adolf) Fraenkel [אברהם הלוי (אדולף) פרנקל‎] on 17 Feb 1891 in Munich, Germany) died in Jerusalem, Israel at the age of 73.

From My Friend, Susan, of NC - 10/14/15:

“In ancient Greece, runners competed in a relay race called a lampadedromia.1 In the race, runners held a torch in their hand and passed it on to the next runner until the final member of the team crossed the finish line. The prize wasn’t awarded to the team that ran fastest—it was awarded to the first team to reach the finish line with its torch still lit. There is a profound lesson here, one taught by prophets ancient and modern: while it is important to start the race, it is even more important that we finish with our torch still lit.”

- Dieter F. Uchtdorf
(b. 06 Nov 1940)

    Thanks so much, Susan!

From Pauline Collins Shofner ('65) of VA - 10/13/15 - "Class of 1965 Reunion Committee Group Hug":

A group hug from the NNHS ladies (missing     Jeanie (Collier Fitzgerald) and George (Konstant) and     H.P. (Lucas) left for home).

Our last 50-Year Reunion Committee meeting before our big weekend, October 16th and 17th. We are ALL extremely excited to experience this milestone with our classmates. Just a friendly reminder...if you're attending Friday evening and have not paid, please bring your $40.00.

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.”

Blinded by the Light

Written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen, 1973
(b. 23 Sept 1949)

Recorded by
Manfred Mann's Earth Band, 1976
(b. 21 Oct 1940

Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Madman drummers bummers,
Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older,
I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin', sneezin' and wheezin,
the calliope crashed to the ground
The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was...
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes
She said "I'll turn you on sonny to something strong,
play the song with the funky break"
And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe outside
And little Early-Pearly came by in his curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride
Asked me if I needed a ride
But she was...
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tired
She's gonna make it through the night
She's gonna make it through the night
But mama, that's where the fun is
But mama, that's where the fun is
Mama always told me not to look into the eye's of the sun
But mama, that's where the fun is
Some brimstone baritone anticyclone rolling stone preacher from the east
Says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone,
that's where they expect it least"
And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner,
watching the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone, reminding him of romance
The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was...
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older,
I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin', sneezin' and wheezin,
the calliope crashed to the ground
Now Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-me-not said daddy's within earshot save the buckshot, turn up the band
Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes
She said "I'll turn you on sonny to something strong"
