10/13/14 - NNHS Newsletter - 239th Birthday of the United States Navy

A powerful Navy we have always regarded as our proper and natural
means of defense; and it has always been of defense that we have
thought, never of aggression or of conquest. But who shall tell us now
what sort of Navy to build? We shall take leave to be strong upon the seas,
in the future as in the past; and there will be no thought of offense
or provocation in that. Our ships are our natural bulwarks.”

- President Woodrow Wilson, 08 Dec 1914, An Annual Message to Congress
(28 Dec 1856 - 03 Feb 1924)

10 Dec 1996 - Northern Puerto Rican Operations Area: USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) 27 Aug 2004 - Naval Station, Norfolk, VA: A UH-3H Sea King helicopter flies over USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), USS George Washington (CVN 73), and USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's federal holiday is brought to you by the United States Navy. Oh, of course, there was something or other about a certain Genoese explorer, and for you Canadians out there, it's also Thanksgiving Day, but largely it's all about the Navy.

Hug a sailor today. Or salute one. Well, okay, just thank one for their services rendered. I still would personally prefer the hugging option.

I've assembled four truly special videos for you - a birthday gift, as it were:

Bill Lee

WOWZERONI! I read this fascinating account three times! Thanks again so very much for sharing it with us, Bill!

    From Debby Braswell Miller ('67) of VA - 10/12/14 - "  Brenda Clarke - '65 Band Sweetheart":

Hi, Carol,

... I have been looking for Brenda Clarke and I know her married name is or was Hudson. I think her husband is or was Judson Hudson (Hampton HS). I did not know if you knew where she is now. I know you guys have a reunion coming up but I am not sure who is in charge or who is on the committee. My sister Becky graduated with you.

I love what you have done with the NNHS 65 letters with the obits of classmates and their family members. I just saw that   Carolyn Webb's ('65) husband (    Bubba Goss, Hampton HS Class of @ 1961) had passed away. I live here in town but I did not see it. Thanks for everything you do.

Debby Braswell Miller

Thank you so much, Debby! I have no knowledge of Brenda's whereabouts. I did a few quick searches for both her and Judson back in February, and found a couple of surprising leads. Whitepages.com listed a Judson B. Hudson in our age range living in Hampton:

http://www.whitepages.com/name/Judson-B-Hudson/Hampton-VA/2q21401

The really curious part is they mentioned as one of the "People Judson may know"       Virginia B. Cash, our former school secretary. Her Memorial Newsletter in turn states:

"We would like to thank Jud and Mary Hudson of Hampton for their special loving care to my mother."

   Try giving Judson a call!

From Kitty Dichtel Heffington (Ferguson HS - '73) of VA - 10/11/14, 9:29 and 10:32 PM - "Hey to all and thank you!!":

Carol...

I am sending some of the newsletter and web information on your website to some other Ferguson '73 alums. We are in the midst of starting to plan a mini get together (not an official reunion)... We figure that none of us is getting younger and two of us have had lots of health issues so this might be a good time... We ALL four got together for the first time since we all graduated at Todd Stadium in June 1973... Boy has a lot happened in those 41 years!!!

Your site continues to be great. I have told people from all over to go to the NNHS 65 website... You are truly a blessing to not only this community, but to all of us who have had or continue to have roots to the entire community.

Thank you so much for listing the Beth Moore and Rosemary Trible Woman's Conference that was held at my husband
Terry's (Warwick class of '66) and my forever and meeting place church, Temple Baptist, on Harpersville Road. John ('62) and Gwen Holland said that they saw it.

Between your putting it in your newsletter, and having a contact that put it on the sign at Towne Bank on Warwick Boulevard, and all of us on the committee putting up fliers all over the area and our pastor and several of us sending emails and letters all over, the conference was a TREMENDOUS success. On behalf of all of us at Temple Baptist who were on the committee, we thank you. Although I don't think any of us have actually sat down and broken down our members vs. the rest if the world, I would guess that it was maybe 30/70 or 35/65 members to non members from all over the area including Suffolk, the Eastern Shore, Williamsburg, Hampton, Yorktown and all over the area... Again, I am sure that your website helped, as did the help from Towne Bank.

Danis... Can you please send this to
Fred Mays ('60)... Fred has a tremendous amount of NN memorabilia.. And for those if you who don't know him.. He now works at Peninsula Funeral Home... We see him a lot.

And for some of you with the USSNN (SS 750) submarine committee... This would have been a good place to have advertised the 25th reunion in July... Oh well, the 30th will be here before we know it.

Some of you are wondering why you are in here.... Please check this website out.... Carol is wonderful about listing things from all over.... And she keeps this going with donations... Which I will be doing shortly...I never sent her my birthday, but other people do even if they aren't from NN high school.. Carol.. We might do it sometime......

All you have to do us ask her to put you on list and she will let you know when a new one is added... She is so thorough!!!!! And a blessing to all of us!!

I usually read them in bunches... Especially during the past several long months.

FHS people......There was a good thing in there on
Mrs. Shelton 10 May 1917 - 19 Mar 2011) before her death and then afterwards.

Also, if you go to different sections, they have memorials, memories, etc.

I got on it years ago...

My coworker, another local,
Marty Whitmore McCoy ('67) at VECTEC at CNU  ...was checking it at work... And I checked it out... I thought you had to be from NN High School. I saw that it is a wonderful history on the peninsula and the surrounding area... And then I also heard about it from John ('62) and Gwen Holland.... At church...

So I signed on... And like I said, that has been years ago...

Anyway.. Check out some of them.... She also has great histories of songs, people, events 50 years ago, recipes, clean jokes ...an excellent publication!!

..... Carol... I just took out my checkbook write a token to officially thank you for everything you have done for me the past many years.... When you are up here sometime.. Maybe your 50th next year... We would love to meet you face to face! I feel like I know you and your family.

Happy Pre-Sunday morning to all!

Kitty and Terry

Thank you so very much, Kitty! When I began the site in 2000, it really was just for the members of the NNHS Class of 1965, but early in 2003 I expanded it to include the NNHS classes of '61 through '66 (which seemed reasonable), and very shortly thereafter it blossomed to include Practically Everybody (because life's too short, and I really never have been a particularly reasonable person).

Inspired by     Glenn Dye ('60) of TX, the Happy Birthday page was opened on 07/21/14, and we now try to celebrate everyone's birthday for an entire week in advance (which gives y'all ample time to send them birthday wishes, and gives me ample time to repair the frequent mistakes and omissions I make on the Newsletters! Y'all send me your birthdays so I can annoy - oh, I mean, help you celebrate, too!

Thanks again, Kitty! The door is open! We look forward to hearing from your friends, especially their memories of times and places as they were in The Olden Days - which really were only yesterday...

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 10/12/14:

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.

'Why do you do that, Mommy?' he asked.

'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.

'What's the matter?' asked Little Johnny. 'Giving up?'

Anchors Aweigh

Words (Verses One and Two) by Midshipman First Class Alfred Hart Miles, USNA - '07, 1906 ;
Music by Lieut. Charles A. Zimmermann, USN, 1906
Words (Verse Three) by Midshipman Royal Lovell, USNA - '26.

Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky.
We'll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh.
Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

Get underway, Navy, Decks cleared for the fray,
We'll hoist true Navy Blue So Army down your Grey-y-y-y.
Full speed ahead, Navy; Army heave to,
Furl Black and Grey and Gold and hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue

Blue of the Seven Seas; Gold of God's great sun
Let these our colors be Till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true With honor over, honor over all.
