10/07/15 - NNHS Newsletter - Shirley Elder Tierney

Shirley Mae Elder Tierney
(d. 04 Oct 2015)

Newport News High School Class of  1965

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   I was quite saddened this Wednesday to read this news.
   Shirley Elder Tierney, Class of 1965, sister of Lorena Elder Smith ('60) of FL and Meredith Elder of PA, passed away in her home in Burke on Sunday, October 04, 2015.

   Shirley was a North End girl and I was from Stuart Gardens, so I first met her when I walked into Mrs. Moser's Journalism class on the first day of eighth grade. I liked her instantly. She was bright and always happy and smiling, and my memories of her will always be so as well.

From the Daily Press - 10/07/15:

                  Shirley Elder Tierney

BURKE - Shirley Elder Tierney, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend, died peacefully in her home on October 4, 2015.

She is survived by two daughters and their children, Erin Tierney-Butler (Lawrence), Nathan and Jillian of Powhatan, Virginia, and Aislinn Creel (Gregory), Eliana and Evan of Midlothian, Virginia; sister, Lorena Smith of Orlando, Florida; brother, Meredith Elder (Sandy) of Glenside, Pennsylvania; and a wide network of cherished extended family.

A 1965 graduate of Newport News High School, she was a committed civil servant and spent nearly 40 years serving the federal government. Her life was spent selflessly caring for her loved ones. She led an exemplary life as caretaker of her own mother for many years. She protected and provided for her girls and they valued her unconditional and endless support, encouragement and wisdom. Her sparkling personality and upbeat attitude will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was an avid collector. A journalist at heart, her analytical mind and keen awareness of the world around her fueled her passion for the print media, maps and family history; not to be outdone by her passion for sports. We know her faith in God has guaranteed her eternal life in Heaven.

A time of visitation and viewing will begin at Peninsula Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015, with a funeral service to be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Shirley Tierney to Serge, Donations Processing Center, P.O. Box 1244, Albert Lea, Minnesota, 56007-1244 (designation 1116) or the .View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Softly and Tenderly

Words and Music by Will L. Thompson (07 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909), 1880

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me;
See, on the portals Hes waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.

Refrain

Come home, come home,
You who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

Refrain

Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming,
Coming for you and for me.

Refrain

O for the wonderful love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

Refrain
