BONUS #2 - http://www.rockremembers.com/2010/07/beep-beep-playmates-1958-top-40.html - What's That Song About?

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beep_Beep_%28song%29:

"Beep Beep" is a song by The Playmates. The song describes a duel between the drivers of a Cadillac and a Nash Rambler on the road.

The song is an example of accelerando, in which the tempo of the song gradually increases throughout the song. [1]

The song was on the Billboard Top 40 charts for twelve weeks, and peaked at #20.[2] It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] Concurrently with this song, American Motors (AMC) was setting production and sales records for the Rambler models.[4]

Because of a directive by the BBC that songs not include brand names in their lyrics, a version of "Beep Beep" was recorded for the European market replacing the Cadillac and Nash Rambler with the generic terms limousine and bubble car.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Playmates:

The Playmates were a late 1950s vocal group, led by the pianist Chic Hetti (born Carl Cicchetti, 26 February 1930), drummer; Donny Conn (born Donald Claps, 29 March 1930); and Morey Carr (born 31 July 1932), all from Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Playmates Donald Claps aka Donny Conn drummer and lyricist Carl Cicchetti aka Chic Hetti pianist music composer and Morey Cohen aka Morey Carr lead vocalist were an instrumental and vocal trio all from Waterbury Connecticut and in the early-1950s at the University of Connecticut, After graduation began touring The USA and Canada small lounges and night clubs in 1952 originally as the "Nitwits" later as the Playmates.

Signed to Roulette Records in 1958 as the label's first vocal group[1],Anticapting a Calypso craze the group recorded an album called Playmates Visit the West Indies. They then released two notable top 40 singles — "Jo-Ann" and "Don't Go Home" — before having a surprise #4 hit (July 9, 1958) with the tempo-changing novelty record "Beep, Beep"[2] - which became a regular spin for Dr. Demento.

The "Beep, Beep" song was on the Billboard Top 40 chart for twelve weeks. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] Concurrently with this song, American Motors (AMC) was setting production and sales records for the Rambler models.[4] Because of a directive by the BBC that songs do not include brand names in its lyrics, a version of "Beep Beep" was recorded for the European market replacing the Cadillac and Nash Rambler with the generic terms limousine and bubble car.

They followed up with a chart listing single in 1959 with "What Is Love" and then again in 1960 with "Wait For Me".[5] After four albums for Roulette, the novelty group — which was known for its between-song comedy and banter as much for its repertoire — broke up in 1965.

From Mary Ann Robertson Boyd - 10/05/15 - "Copeland Park - 1942 to 1945":

As a 6-year-old I moved onto E Street one rainy Sunday in October 1942. Started school before the Copeland Park school was completed, according to notes my mother made. Am taking a memoirs class now so these memories are coming back. We had a wonderful family, the Nelsons, who lived in the other side of the house and shared many good times—especially trips to Buckroe!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Mary Ann! That memoirs class sounds exciting!

 Beep Beep

Written by Carl Cicchetti and Donald Claps

Recorded by The Playmates, 1958

While riding in my Cadillac,
What to my surprise.
A little Nash Rambler was following me -
About one third my size.
The guy must've wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn. Beep! Beep!
I'll show him that a Cadillac
Is not a car to scorn.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
His horn went beep beep beep!

I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake.
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind;
He still had on his brake.
He must have thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn.
I'll show him that a Cadillac
Is not a car to scorn.
Beep! Beep!
His horn went beep beep!

My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust.
Soon we were doing ninety -
Must've left him in the dust.
When I peeked in the mirror of my car,
I couldn't believe my eyes:
The little Nash Rambler was right behind -
I think that guy could fly.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
His horn went beep beep beep.

Now we're doing a hundred and ten -
This certainly was a race.
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace.
The guy must've wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn.
I'll show him that a Cadillac
Is not a car to scorn.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
His horn went beep beep!

Now we're doing a hundred and twenty -
As fast as I could go.
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow.
The fellow rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear,
"Hey, Buddy, how can I get this car
Out of second gear?!
?"
