10/04/15 - NNHS Newsletter - The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

“He judged the cause of the poor and needy for his own good:
was it not therefore because he knew me, saith the Lord?”

- Jeremiah 22:16 (Douay-Rheims Version)

“Those who sing pray twice.”

 - Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 - 03 Oct 1226)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today we are celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, because we are a very varied lot, and we celebrate everything together like the big happy Typhoon family we have become.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Things_Bright_and_Beautiful:

All Things Bright and Beautiful is an Anglican hymn, also popular with other Christian denominations.

The piece can be sung to several melodies, in particular the 17th-century English melody "Royal Oak", adapted by Martin Shaw, and "All Things Bright and Beautiful" by William Henry Monk (1823–1889). There have also been other adaptations, such as a full choral piece by John Rutter.

Composition of the hymn's text has been attributed to three locations: at Llanwenarth House in Govilon, Monmouthshire, in the valley of the River Usk; at Markree Castle near Sligo; and in Minehead and the nearby village of Dunster in 1848 by Mrs. Cecil F. Alexander (from Dublin, Ireland). The hymn may have been inspired by a verse from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: "He prayeth best, who loveth best; All things great and small; For the dear God who loveth us; He made and loveth all."

Alternatively, inspiration may have come from William Paley's Natural Theology, published in 1802, that argues for God as the designer of the natural world. For example, the hymn's second verse alludes to "wings" and verse 7 refers to "eyes". Paley cited wings and eyes as examples of complexity of design, analogous to that of a watch, with God as the "Divine Watchmaker".

The hymn was first published in Alexander's Hymns for Little Children. It consists of a series of stanzas that elaborate upon verses of the Apostles' Creed.

“When it comes to spiritual truth, how can we know that we are on the right path? One way is by asking the right questions... Questions like 'Does my life have meaning?' 'Do I believe in God?'  'Do I believe that God knows and loves me?' 'Do I believe that God hears and answers my prayers?' 'Am I truly happy?' 'Are my efforts leading me to the highest spiritual goal and value in life?' ”

All Things Bright and Beautiful

Words by Cecil F. Alexander (April 1818 - 12 Oct 1895), 1848

17th-century English melody "Royal Oak", adapted by Martin Shaw (09 Mar 1875 - 24 Oct 1958), 1915

Refrain

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.

Refrain

[Most hymnals omit the following verse]

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

Refrain

The purple headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

Refrain

The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one.

Refrain

The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
To gather every day.

Refrain

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

Refrain
