10/03/14 - NNHS Newsletter - Butterfly

“Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small
but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life.
And everyone deserves a little sunshine.”

- Jeffrey Glassberg

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter's butterfly theme tends to repeat every year in one form or another.

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stcdNj0SANw - Butterfly - Mariah Carey

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_%28Mariah_Carey_song%29:

"Butterfly" is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey's seventh album, Butterfly (1997). It is a ballad combining elements of pop and gospel, but Carey had originally conceived it as a house record with David Morales titled "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)". After realizing how personal the lyrics were and how they could be applied to Butterfly, she wrote "Butterfly" with Afanasieff.[1] On the song's lyrics, Carey comments "It was '97 and I was leaving my marriage [to Tommy Mottola] which encompassed my life. I was writing the song 'Butterfly' wishing that that's what he would say to me."[2]

It was released as the album's second single in 1997. It did not appear on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart because it was not issued as a commercial single in the United States; Billboard magazine rules at the time stipulated that a commercial release was required for a song to enter the Hot 100. It was a moderate success on charts that airplay-only singles were allowed to enter, such as the Rhythmic Airplay Chart, Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and Top 40 Mainstream charts, and it reached number 7 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. "Butterfly" was not a substantial hit outside the U.S.: it reached number 22 in the UK after 5 years of 12 consecutive Top-10 singles and number 27 in Australia, failing to match the success of "Honey", the album's first single. In France and Germany the single did not reach the top forty.

"Butterfly" was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, which it lost to Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery". In honor of Mariah's 20th Anniversary in music, "Butterfly" was chosen as her #1 song by fans.

HEALTH UPDATES:

1.   From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 10/02/14, 9:31 PM - "  Jerry (Allen - '65) is doing better : )":

Just a quick note to  let you know that Jerry continues to improve.  We went to the see doctor yesterday and things are looking up.  We have taken some short walks and rides. We rest awhile then move about...

He has very little discomfort now.  Tomorrow is the last day for injections. He is very happy about that.  Oral meds start Saturday.  He has kept his appetite throughout the whole ordeal.  We are not surprised.

He looks good.  I am enjoying having him home now that he is feeling better.

Thanks again, everybody.  As Jerry said, he dodged another bullet.

Love and blessings!

Judy and Jerry

SUPER-DE-DUPER! Thank you, Dearest Judy! Give your sweet husband our love!

Twice a year, Mormons gather for a "General Conference" to hear Church leaders share inspired messages and counsel.

These sermons are broadcast publicly online and on select television stations worldwide.

We invite you to join us for conference sessions at https://www.lds.org/general-conference.

Thank you, Andi! The Semi-Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is indeed this weekend. Not only are the messages shared uplifting and encouraging, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is magnificent.

I invite y'all to listen! You can tune into BYUtv or listen online at lds.org.

As is our family tradition, we will be watching General Conference on Saturday and Sunday with my sister,      Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky of NC, the Best Dressed Girl in the Class of 1959) at her home. This one should be really exciting - as are they all!

From Barbara Woods Spiers ('61) of VA - 10/02/14 - "Low Carb Breakfast Casserole":

  Low Carb Breakfast Casserole

INGREDIENTS:
1 pound good sausage
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped
6 eggs, beat with fork or wire whisk
1 cup half & half
1/2 cup water
2 cups cheese, grated, use your fave
(I used 1 cup Mexican taco cheese & 1 cup mozzarella)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Brown sausage in frying pan, drain, place in the bottom of a greased casserole dish..
Spread the onions and peppers over it. (I sautéed mine a tiny bit, but it's not necessary)
Mix all the eggs, half & half, water and cheese together, and pour over meat.
Bake at 350 for 45 -60 minutes.

NOTES:
Mixing the cheese into the eggs makes this so much better than just sprinkling it over the top.

   OOH! Thank you, Barbara!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 10/02/14:

Day 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

Day 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

Day 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep deprivation, incessant pleas for food at all hours of the night.

Day 767 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

Day 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

Day 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

Day 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and may be snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue, something akin to mole speak, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

Butterfly

Written by Mariah Carey (b. 27 Mar 1970), Walter Afanasieff (b. 10 Feb 1958), and Dan Shea

Recorded by Mariah Carey (b. 27 Mar 1970), 1997

When you love someone so deeply
They become your life
It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside
Blindly I imaged I could
Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open my hands
And watch you rise

[Chorus:]
Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
Butterfly

I have learned that beauty
Has to flourish in the light
Wild horses run unbridled
Or their spirit dies
You have given me the courage
To be all that I can
And truly feel your heart will
Lead you back to me when you're
Ready to land

[Chorus]

I can't pretend these tears
Aren't overflowing steadily
I can't prevent this hurt from
Almost overtaking me
But I will stand and say goodbye
For you'll never be mine
Until you know the way it feels to fly

[Chorus]

So flutter through the sky
Butterfly
Spread your wings and fly
Butterfly
