10/03/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Butterfly

“Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small
but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life.
And everyone deserves a little sunshine.”

- Jeffrey Glassberg

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter is being revisited from exactly three years ago today:

BONUS - - Butterfly - Mariah Carey

"Butterfly" is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey's seventh album, Butterfly (1997). It is a ballad combining elements of pop and gospel, but Carey had originally conceived it as a house record with David Morales titled "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)". After realizing how personal the lyrics were and how they could be applied to Butterfly, she wrote "Butterfly" with Afanasieff.[1] On the song's lyrics, Carey comments "It was '97 and I was leaving my marriage [to Tommy Mottola] which encompassed my life. I was writing the song 'Butterfly' wishing that that's what he would say to me."[2]

It was released as the album's second single in 1997. It did not appear on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart because it was not issued as a commercial single in the United States; Billboard magazine rules at the time stipulated that a commercial release was required for a song to enter the Hot 100. It was a moderate success on charts that airplay-only singles were allowed to enter, such as the Rhythmic Airplay Chart, Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and Top 40 Mainstream charts, and it reached number 7 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. "Butterfly" was not a substantial hit outside the U.S.: it reached number 22 in the UK after 5 years of 12 consecutive Top-10 singles and number 27 in Australia, failing to match the success of "Honey", the album's first single. In France and Germany the single did not reach the top forty.

"Butterfly" was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, which it lost to Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery". In honor of Mariah's 20th Anniversary in music, "Butterfly" was chosen as her #1 song by fans.

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important! When I tried to vote for Grace again today, I noticed the site was trying to pull a switcheroo on me. It tried to persuade me to vote for the wrong Grace!  OH, NO!

Grace is #1 in pet of the month:

and #3 in pet of the year:

  WOWZERONI!!! That's fabulous, Norris!

Vote early, vote often (or at least cast your allotted daily vote) - and don't drop the ball now!

    From Bobby Fox ('63) of IA - 10/02/10, 11:51 AM - "Ms. Ransome . .":

In reference to     Carla Fine's ('65 - of Australia) question about Ms. Ransome.   I'm quite sure it was Margaret Ransome.  I remember my mother telling me she had her as a teacher as well.  Although these days I can't remember what I had for lunch,  I do remember Mrs. Ransome.  She was a very good teacher.  Anyone that could make me learn to read must have been just great.

Warm regards,  Bobby.   (Sorry I had to use your personal address.)

Thanks so much, Bobby! And I have no objections to which of my several email addies y'all use; I'm just glad whenever your mail reaches me!

From Steve Pullen ('65) of VA - 10/02/10, 1:07 PM - "Mrs. Ransome":

It was Margaret Ransome.

   Thanks, Steve!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 10/02/10, 12:25 PM - "Mrs. Ransome":

Idea for finding info on Mrs. Ransome of Magruder:  Check the Hill’s directories for the mid-50s for NN/Hampton. “Ransome” is a unique enough surname that there should not be more than a few. Hill’s often lists occupations, so any female listed as a teacher is probably our gal. With a first name (and possibly a spouse’s name), it should be easy to find the date of death and an obituary.

Even better, the Norfolk Library has Peninsula Hill’s for those years. I’ll try to remember to have a look.

   That'd be super, David!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 10/02/10, 7:20 PM - "Mrs. Ransome":

Don’t pop the cork on the champagne just yet. The lady you cite may not be the Magruder teacher. Here is what I found in the 1920 census:

1920 United States Federal Census
about Margaret Ransome

Her husband’s occupation was listed as “Farmer”. The odds are long of this woman attending college and teaching in the NN school system, then returning to Mechanicsville to die. Do any former students recall her being Mulatto? Moreover, a woman born in 1889 would have been in her mid-60s as a teacher at Magruder in the mid 1950s. Do her former students recall her being of that age?

The search continues.

OOOPS! Wrong lady!    Even though she was not my teacher, I do remember her quite well. She was quite intimidating; I was afraid of her.  (No, wait, I was afraid of everybody, so that doesn't count...)  She was tall and thin with snow white hair pulled back into a bun at the nape of her neck, and she had to be at least sixty (at the time I thought she was 75 or so...) - but she was most definitely not a Mulatto.

Perhaps her name is just not listed on the SSDI.

   Thanks so much, David!

From Carla Fine Cripps ('65) of Australia - 10/02/10, 10:54 PM - "RE: OOOPS! Wrong Mrs. Ransome":

Well, hmmm. Margaret sure rang a bell, though. Obviously not this lady. If I don't have to use it asap, I'll run it by my Mom on our regular fortnightly phone call. She couldn't remember it off the bat, but I'm sure if I said it, she'd know.

Thanks for keeping on top of this.

You're welcome, Carla, but hang on.....

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 10/02/10, 10:20 PM - "The Real Mrs. Margaret S. Ransome":

On the other hand, THIS Margaret Ransome may be closer to the mark:
Hampton City Directory, 1941, Hampton Roads Avenue (not far from Magruder).

Wife of a physician could well be college educated and employed as a teacher.

WOWZERONI! I'd say we have a winner! Thank you so much, Captain!

Written by Mariah Carey (b. 27 Mar 1970), Walter Afanasieff (b. 10 Feb 1958), and Dan Shea

Recorded by Mariah Carey (b. 27 Mar 1970), 1997

When you love someone so deeply
They become your life
It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside
Blindly I imaged I could
Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open my hands
And watch you rise

Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly

I have learned that beauty
Has to flourish in the light
Wild horses run unbridled
Or their spirit dies
You have given me the courage
To be all that I can
And truly feel your heart will
Lead you back to me when you're
Ready to land

I can't pretend these tears
Aren't overflowing steadily
I can't prevent this hurt from
Almost overtaking me
But I will stand and say goodbye
For you'll never be mine
Until you know the way it feels to fly

So flutter through the sky
Spread your wings and fly
