Golden Earrings

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.”

- Proverbs 25:12

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This song is the same age as I am. Golden Earrings is one of my all-time favorite films - and why not?  It has everything - spies, intrigue, romance, costumes, jewelry, singing, dancing - and gypsies!  What's not to love?

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN2aKrUmFGk - Golden Earrings - Peggy Lee, 1947

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Earrings

Golden Earrings is a 1947 romantic spy film made by Paramount Pictures and starring Ray Milland and Marlene Dietrich. It was directed by Mitchell Leisen and produced by Harry Tugend from a screenplay by Frank Butler, Helen Deutsch and Abraham Polonsky, based on a novel by Jolán Földes. The music score was by Victor Young and the cinematography by Daniel L. Fapp.

The film's haunting song, "Golden Earrings", sung in the movie by Murvyn Vye, was a hit recording in 1947-48 by Peggy Lee.

HORRIFIC NEWS:

From Cheryl Mays Howard ('66 / '67) of VA - 10/02/14 - "Prayer Request for missionaries":

I have received these two emails from our missionary friends, one yesterday and one this morning. I just wanted to pass it on so that as many people as possible can pray specifically for our brothers and sisters. Much love and blessings.

A friend just got a text message from her brother asking her
to shower him and his parish in prayer. He is part of a mission and ISIS has taken over the town they are in today.

He said ISIS is systematically going house to house to all the Christians and asking the children to denounce Jesus. He said so far not one child has. And so far all have consequently been killed. But not the parents. The UN has withdrawn and the missionaries are on their own. They are determined to stick it out for the sake of the families - even if it means their own deaths. He is very afraid, has no idea how to even begin ministering to these families who have seen their children martyred. Yet he says he knows God has called him for some reason to  be his voice and hands at this place at this time. Even so, he is begging prayers for his courage to live out his vocation in such dire circumstances. And
like the children accept martyrdom if he is called to do so. She asked me to ask everyone we know to please pray for them. These brave parents instilled such a fervent faith in their children that they chose martyrdom. Please surround them in their loss with your prayers for hope and perseverance. She was able to talk to her brother briefly by phone. She didn't say it but I believe she believes it will be their last conversation. Pray for her too. She said he just kept asking  her to help him know what to do and do it. She told him to tell the families we ARE praying for them and they are not alone or forgotten -- no matter what. Her e- mail broke my heart. Please keep all in your prayers.
Thanks

This came this morning... Just a few minutes ago I received the following text
message on my phone from Sean Malone who leads Crisis Relief International (CRI). We then spoke briefly on the phone and  I assured him that we would share this urgent prayer need with all of our contacts.

"We lost the city of Queragosh (Qaraqosh). It fell to ISIS and they are beheading children systematically. This is the city we have been smuggling food too. ISIS has pushed back Peshmerga (Kurdish forces) and is within 10 minutes of where our CRI team is working. Thousands more fled into the city of Erbil last night. The UN evacuated it's staff in Erbil. Our team is unmoved and will stay. Prayer cover needed!"

Please pray sincerely for the deliverance of the people of Northern Iraq from the terrible advancement of ISIS and its
extreme Islamic goals for mass conversion or death for Christians across this region. May I plead with you not to ignore this email.

Do not forward it before you have prayed through it. Then send it to as many people as possible. Send it to friends and Christians you may know. Send it to your prayer group. Send it to your pastor and phone him/her to pray on Sunday during the service - making a special time of prayer for this. We need to stand in the gap for our fellow Christians.

Love, light and blessings

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 10/01/14 - "Mini _____ Pies":

  Mini _____ Pies

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup of Bisquick
1/2 Cup of milk
2 eggs
Fillings

DIRECTIONS:
Mix Bisquick, milk, and eggs together for a base. Put about 1 tablespoon in each muffin cup.

Top with about 1/4 cup of any "fillings" you want. - Cheeseburger, Pizza, BLT, Chicken and Veggies, etc.... You can mix it up in the pan (any meat should already be cooked)

Then top with one more tablespoon of the "Bisquick Mixture" - and bake at 375 for 25-30. It's a great way to get rid of your leftovers.

   COOL! Thanks, Jean!

From My Friend, Jim, of NV - 10/01/14 - "Cheese and Garlic Crack Bread":

  Cheese and Garlic Crack Bread

INGREDIENTS:
1 crusty loaf, preferably sourdough or Vienna
ľ cup shredded Mozzarella cheese (or other melting cheese)
Garlic Butter
1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 garlic cloves, minced
⅜ tsp salt
1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Melt butter and then mix in other Garlic Butter ingredients.
Cut the bread on a diagonal into 1" diamonds but do not cut all the way through the bread (just as you would cut a french stick for garlic bread).
Use your fingers or a knife to pry open each crack and drizzle in a teaspoon of butter and stuff in a pinch of cheese. This might sound like a bit of an effort, but I promise you it is worth it! You don't need to be super neat, it's nice to have some of the butter drizzled over the crust.
Wrap with foil and bake for 15 minutes until the cheese has mostly melted, then unwrap and bake for 5 minutes more to make the bread nice and crusty. Serve immediately.

NOTES:
1. To make ahead, after wrapping with foil, wrap with cling wrap as well. Store in fridge overnight or freeze to store for longer. To cook, thaw then follow recipe instructions to bake.
2. The denser the bread, the better the pieces will hold together when pulled off.

   OOH! Thanks, Jim!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 10/01/14:

"Dad, where did I come from?" asked a 10 year old.

The father was shocked that a 10 year old would be asking a question like that. He was hoping to wait a few more years before he would have to explain the facts of life, but he figured it was better a few years early than a few days too late, so, for the next two hours he explained every thing to his son.

When he got finished, he asked his son what prompted his question to which his son replied, "I was talking to the new kid across the street and he said he came from Ohio, so I was just wondering where I came from."

Golden Earrings

Music by Victor Young
(08 Aug 1900 – 10 Nov 1956)

Words by Jay Livingston (28 Mar 1915 – 17 Oct 2001)
and
Ray Evans (04 Feb 1915 – 15 Feb 2007), 1947

There's a story the gypsies know is true
That when your love wears golden earrings,
She (he) belongs to you.
An old love story that's known to very few,
But if you wear those golden earrings,
Love will come to you.
By the burning fire, they will glow with ev'ry coal.
You will hear desire whisper low inside your soul.
So be my gypsy;
Make love your guiding light,
And let that pair of golden earrings
Cast their spell tonight.
