Jean Elizabeth Pugh
(d. 29 Oct 2012)

Newport News High School Class of February 1946

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

There is more sad news this Monday.
Jean Pugh passed away in Hayes on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the age of 84. She was probably a member of the Class of 1946.

I was privileged to know Dr. Pugh back in the early sixties, as we were both members of Trinity Methodist Church.  She was a fabulous individual, always cheerful, smiling, and friendly.  Knowing what a brilliant woman she was, I remember being totally in awe of her, but as in the case of    Alda Chapman Gall, Class of 1936 (11 Nov 1918 - 02 May 2012), it never once occurred to me that she might have been a graduate of Newport News High School.

From Fred Field (June '45) of CA - 10/03/12  - "  Jean Pugh Obit.":

Thank you so very much, Fred.

Jean will be greatly missed by all who value education in Gloucester County. She was a true friend to all stakeholders in GCPS. She validated all those who strive for Gloucester students and schools. I personally cherish her kind words to me, my husband, and my son. May she rest in peace.

A great professor of mine at Christopher Newport and a valuable school board member in the Gloucester community... she left her footprint on this earth in many positive ways, which is what we all hope to achieve!

Sympathies to the Pugh family. Jean was my Biology instructor in my freshman year at Christopher Newport College. Her class was tough but she taught me a lot about Science. I know she will be greatly missed.

Servant of God, Well Done!

Words by Charles Wesley (28 Dec 1707 - 29 Mar 1788)

Music by George J. Elvey (27 Mar 1816 - 09 Dec 1893)

(The Methodist Hymnal, 1966, #288)

Wesley wrote this hymn in 1770 on the occasion of the death of clergyman George White.
Elvey's tune, "Diademata", has been set to several other hymns, notably "Crown Him with Many Thorns" and "Soldiers of Christ, Arise".

 Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare’s past;
The battle’s fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last.

With saints enthroned on high,
Thou dost thy Lord proclaim,
And still to God salvation cry,
Salvation to the Lamb!

O happy, happy soul!
In ecstasies of praise,
Long as eternal ages roll,
Thou seest Thy Savior’s face.

Redeemed from earth and pain,
Ah! when shall we ascend,
And all in Jesus’ presence reign
With our translated friend?
