It Won't Be Long

I'm sure it won't be long until you find someone nice who loves you.”

- Sebastian Ischer

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme might apply to many things!

BONUS - - It Won't Be Long - The Beatles

"It Won't Be Long" is the opening track on With the Beatles, the Beatles' second UK album, and was the first original song recorded for it.[1] Although credited to Lennon–McCartney, it was primarily a John Lennon composition, with Paul McCartney assisting with the lyrics and arrangement.[2]

The chorus is a play on the words "be long" and "belong".[3] The song features early Beatles' trademarks such as call-and-response yeah-yeahs and scaling guitar riffs.[4] Typical also of this phase of Beatles' song writing is the melodramatic ending (similar to "She Loves You", which had just been recorded and was about to be released) where the music stops, allowing Lennon a brief solo vocal improvisation before the song finishes on a major seventh chord[3] ("She Loves You" ends on a major sixth). There is an unusual middle eight—for what is, essentially, a rock and roll song—that uses chromatically descending chords.

John Lennon, in his last interview, told Playboy magazine that the song was the beginning of a wider audience for Beatles' music than the youthful throngs that had fervently followed them from their Liverpool clubbing days. "It was only after a critic for the [London] Times said we put 'Aeolian cadences' in 'It Won't Be Long' that the middle classes started listening to us. ... To this day, I have no idea what 'Aeolian cadences' are. They sound like exotic birds."[5] Actually the critic, William Mann, said this about the song "Not a Second Time."[6] Bob Dylan had much the same thing in mind when he wrote that Beatles' chords were "outrageous, just outrageous."[7]

From Rick Harman ('65) of VA - 09/29/17, 6:35 PM - "  John Stover, Jr., Class of 1965":

It seems to me that John was at NNHS as I remember him from 8th and 9th grade; never kept up with him after that. He may have even transferred out of our school, but he was definitely there early on and perhaps someone else following the school site and letters will want to know.

Take care and thank you.

Thank you so much for calling this to my attention, Rick! I didn't really know John as our paths never crossed, but now I do remember his name. His eighth grade portrait appears in the 1961 Anchor, but I could find no listing for him in the '62-'65 editions, nor in the '63 Krabba, but as this image shows him wearing a graduation gown, he surely transferred to one of the other peninsula high schools. As he began with us, however, we're going to keep him with us in our listings.

You have my sincerest condolences on the loss of your friend and classmate.

It Won't Be Long

Written primarily by John Lennon (09 Oct 1940 - 08 Dec 1980),
but credited (as were all Beatles songs written by either person) to
Paul McCartney (b. 18 June 1942) assisting with the lyrics and arrangement

Recorded byThe Beatles,1963

It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, till I belong to you

Every night when everybody has fun
Here am I sitting all on my own

It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, till I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

Every night the tears come down from my eyes
Every day I've done nothing but cry

It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, till I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

So every day we'll be happy I know
Not I know that you won't leave me no more

It won't be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, yeh
It won't be long yeh, till I belong to you, woo
