09/28/13 - NNHS Newsletter - Early Autumn

“Then summer fades and passes and October comes. We'll smell smoke
then, and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness,
swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure.”

- Thomas Wolfe
(03 Oct 1900 - 15 Sept 1938)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Can you feel the crisp autumn air where you are yet?

Carol,

Thank you very much for those kind words. You are an amazing force of nature to have performed such yeoman faithful service to all of your friends and their families for so long and I know that my thank you is echoed by hundreds of others, classmates you knew, those you never met, their families and friends who have received your attention and kind remembrances and shared them on your NNHS website. Margaret Lee was always a loving aunt to me, my sister Mary Beth and brother Jay - our families shared dinner every Sunday after church at my grandmother's dining room table throughout the 1950's and early 1960's and she was there for every important part of my life. My memories of her will always put a smile on my face. Thank you for taking your time to write -

God Bless you, Carol

Bobby

Sunday dinners at our grandmother's homes - such beautiful, precious memories for those blessed enough to have had them!  Thank you so much, Bobby!   Again, you have my deepest sympathies

   WOWZERONI-RINI! Thank you, Hunter!

    From Jimmy Smith ('62 / '63) of VA - 09/26/13 - "We Didn't Start the Fire":

This song and its title was on Final Jeopardy -- only one person got It right.

Question was (paraphrased) "What 1980's song do history teachers praise for its educational value."

Never could understand all the references on Billy Joel's song however, fortunately, with this VIDEO, given the pictures, we now can "see" what our "ears" couldn't.

Anyway, checked to see purpose behind the song, Apparently, it's Joel's homage to the 40-years of historical headlines since his birth in 1949. Wish we could have appreciated
the depths of this song when it was released.

Twenty years later, it's amazing what Joel was able to put into music and lyrics lasting only a few minutes. Whether you are a Billy Joel fan or not, you probably remember his great song, 'We Didn't Start the Fire..'

Here it is, set to pictures... It's a neat flashback through the past half century. I never did know all the words. Turn up volume, sit back and enjoy a review of 50 years of history in less than three minutes! Thanks to Billy Joel and some guy from the University of Chicago with a lot of spare time.

On the video webpage, Top left gives you full screen.... Top right lets you pause. Bottom left shows the year.

The older you are, the more pictures you will recognize. Anyone over age 65 should remember over 90% of what they see. But it's great at any age.

   WOWZERONI! Thanks, Jimmy!

Early Autumn

Music by Ralph Burns (29 June 1922 – 21 Nov 2001) and Woody Herman (16 May 1913 – 29 Oct 1987), 1949

Words by Johnny Mercer (18 Nov 1909 – 25 June 1976), 1949

Recorded by Ella Fitzgerald (25 Apr 1917 – 15 June 1996)

When an early autumn walks the land and chills the breeze
and touches with her hand the summer trees,
perhaps you'll understand what memories I own.

There's a dance pavilion in the rain all shuttered down,
a winding country lane all russet brown,
a frosty window pane shows me a town grown lonely.

That spring of ours that started so April-hearted,
seemed made for just a boy and girl.
I never dreamed, did you, any fall would come in view
so early, early.

Darling if you care, please, let me know,
I'll meet you anywhere, I miss you so.
Let's never have to share another early autumn.
